Our Eagle Gets a Name!
Beginning last spring, there was a call to name the All Saints Eagle mascot. After many votes, the tallies have been counted and our Eagle has a name!
Without further ado, we introduce the All Saints Eagle, Cuthbert! Our eagle’s namesake is Saint Cuthbert who was known for his successful effort to protect birds in his native Northumbria, now Scotland. His feast day is September 4th, so we will make sure to plan special activities around that day for our own Cuthbert.
St. Cuthbert also is often depicted with the symbol of an Eagle in artwork. During this time of Covid-19, it is interesting that one of St. Cuthbert’s patronages is against epidemics.
Author Karen Kiefer Discusses Drawing God
All Saints Catholic School hosted a literacy event with Author Karen Kiefer as part of its Catholic Schools Week celebration on Thursday, February 4, 2021. During a school-wide virtual Zoom meeting followed by grade level breakout sessions, the author discussed her inspiration for writing the book Drawing God (hint: it involves God and a supermarket), how the writing process took shape as she developed the book. and the importance of taking time to think about and express your faith.
Drawing God is an uplifting story that encourages families to explore the multitude of ways that God’s presence shines brightly. In the story, Emma returns from an art museum field trip and decides to draw Picasso. When Emma then decides to address the spectacular by drawing God, her classmates can’t see God in her drawings until they are inspired by Emma’s excitement and faith. Mrs. Kiefer hopes that by encountering Emma and her contagious faith, Drawing God will inspire people to think and talk about how and where they see God.
Mrs. Kiefer, who refers to herself as an “accidental author,” shared the story of how God’s plan (his whisper) directed her to write a book focused on encouraging readers to express their faith. While introducing the breakout sessions, Mrs. Kiefer encouraged students to “consider your gifts, your thoughts, and how you specifically are inspired to draw God.”
You can find out more about Karen Kiefer and the drawing God movement inspired by her book on the website: https://www.drawing-
Our thanks to Mrs. Coyle for her efforts in setting up this special author event and to Karen Kiefer for her inspirational message encouraging all to think about how and where they see God.

All Saints Selected for U.S. Department of Education Visit
It was a great honor for us to welcome Mrs. Aimee Viana, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Mr. Michael Chamberlain, Special Assistant for Rural Outreach, to All Saints yesterday. Joined by a number of distinguished guests that included Dr. Joseph Vorbach (Superintendent of Schools), Mrs. Renee White (Assistant Superintendent for Enrollment and Marketing), Mayor Hal Parrish (City of Manassas) and Mrs. Theresa Coates Ellis (Manassas City Council Member), it was a remarkable moment in the life of our school.
In recent days a number of people have inquired as to when I learned of the visit and how All Saints was actually selected. I received a call from the Department of Education just last week indicating that a member of their leadership would be in the area and would be pleased to visit All Saints. After learning of All Saints, they decided to reach out to us to inquire whether a visit might be possible so that they might learn first-hand what makes All Saints unique.
In this regard, the visit provided us an opportunity to showcase specific aspects of our school that were of particular interest to the U.S. Department of Education, namely differentiation of instruction, integration of technology, and the benefits of the tax credit program for families in our community.
There were many highlights throughout the event, such as the visits to classrooms and the one-on-one interaction that our students enjoyed with our special guests. Perhaps the most poignant was the listening session during which a small group of students, parents and faculty shared their perspective on the “All Saints experience.” Prompted with a single question as to why they had chosen All Saints and what makes our school so distinct, each individual spoke from the heart, sharing the impact that All Saints has had on their family through the years. It was a moment of tremendous school pride and recognition of the gift of Catholic education.
I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to all of our participants. I wish to specifically thank and congratulate Camden (President of the SCA) and Brenda (Vice President of the SCA) who represented the entire student body and beautifully articulated the difference that All Saints has made in their lives.
Start to finish, the visit was a wonderful experience for our school community – and a great affirmation of all that we have achieved together through the years. Indeed, with God all things are possible!
