Principal’s Message

This week I want to extend a special word of thanks and appreciation to the many volunteers who contributed to the success of our Auction & Casino event. With more than two hundred parents, parishioners and community members gathered for the occasion, it was a wonderful time of fellowship and fund-raising, all for the benefit of our students. Again, I wish to thank Mrs. Carol Rice, auction chair, for orchestrating the many details and committees who worked so tirelessly in the weeks and days leading up to the event. From start to finish, it was a first-class celebration with delicious food, beautiful auction items, a clever photo booth, an entertaining auctioneer, and fun at the gaming tables. One need look no further than the Parish Activities Center on Saturday evening to witness first-hand the vibrant spirit that surrounds our school community! Thank you to everyone who contributed and to those who supported the event through their attendance….and generous bids!

Annual Bullying Survey

Through our Virtue Program and the full integration of our faith across the curriculum, students at All Saints are encouraged to develop habits of respect, kindness, and compassion. Over the course of years, these traits become embedded and part of the fabric of our students’ lives. Nevertheless, it is vitally important that we explicitly remind our students of the dangers and consequences of bullying.

We now know and recognize that the challenge of bullying in our country is not going to simply disappear. For this reason, our families and Catholic school are called to be counter-cultural, taking a clear stand against these behaviors. It is our responsibility to guide the children in recognizing that each individual is created in the very image and likeness of God. As such, respect and reverence should surround all interactions. Similarly, the complexities and risks associated with technology in the 21st Century are a part of our day to day existence. It remains our responsibility to teach the children how to navigate these information highways, always using technology in a manner that shows respect to one another and God’s creation.

In accordance with our school and diocesan policy, this week I would like to invite all parents to participate in an anonymous, online survey for the purpose of assessing the level of bullying at All Saints Catholic School. We estimate that it should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete the survey. Students in grades 3-8 will complete a corresponding survey during their computer class beginning next week.

Parents are asked to complete the survey by Friday, December 5th. In advance, we thank you for your participation in our efforts to both assess our current climate and to establish benchmarks for future reference.

If perhaps you are wondering what you can do as a parent to further support this initiative, I would offer the following suggestions:

1)      Take some time this week to review the topic of bullying with your son/daughter. Help them to understand that the repeated, targeted nature of bullying is very hurtful, often resulting in wounds that last years, and in some cases a lifetime. Help them to understand that all students have a right and expectation to be able to come to school each day to learn in an environment free of fear.

2)      Remind your child that, should he/she ever encounter an instance of bullying, it is vitally important that he/she share this information with a faculty or staff member. If for any reason they are uncomfortable doing so, please contact your child’s teacher directly. It is only with this type of information that we are able to take steps to help prevent future occurrences.

3)      Spend some time discussing with your child the practical steps that he/she can take to discourage bullying. For example, sharing strategies or even role-playing appropriate responses can help to empower students not to laugh, not to participate, and to take a stand whenever they witness an instance of bullying.

Thanksgiving Luncheon – Directions for Parents

Parents are asked to arrive and sign in at the front office fifteen minutes prior to their child’s assigned lunch time. After signing in, parents are asked to report directly to their child’s classroom. The homeroom teacher will provide guidance as to when families should begin to report to the cafeteria for the luncheon.

The schedule for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is as follows:

11:00 – 11:40 Grades 6-8
11:40 – 12:20 Grades 4-5
12:20 – 1:00 Grades 2-3
1:00 – 1:40 Grades K-1

(Note: Parents attending back-to-back lunch sessions need not wait in line multiple times. Rather, after enjoying lunch with their first child, they may remain seated in the cafeteria where they can watch for their son/daughter in the food service line. Once the child has arrived at the front of the line and has been served, the parent is asked to meet the child there and lead him/her back to the table.)

Order forms for the luncheon are due tomorrow, Thursday, November 20th. We do hope that you will join us for this Thanksgiving tradition!

Principal’s Message

On Saturday evening the PTO will host the annual Casino & Auction Night, a much beloved tradition in our community.  While the event has changed and evolved through the decades, the objective has remained the same – to provide an enjoyable evening of fellowship while raising funds to support the mission of our school. We gather in support of our commitment to excellence and we celebrate the fact that All Saints is a place where learning is integrated every day with the very best traditions of our Catholic faith.

The proceeds from this year’s event will directly support the fine work of the Parent-Teacher Organization, benefitting the students, faculty and staff.  I remain grateful for the stellar commitment of the PTO leadership and thank them for their enthusiasm and steadfastness in supporting our mission.  In a special way, I wish to extend a word of thanks to Mrs. Carol Rice who has served as chairperson and to the many volunteers who have invested so much time and energy in support of the cause.

With delicious food, casino games, as well as a silent and live auction, it will be a wonderful evening of fellowship and entertainment!  The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center and tickets remain available for this special “black & white” themed event.  I hope that many of you will be able to join us for the celebration!

Principal’s Message

This week we will launch the 3rd Annual Fund, a long-range development initiative designed to provide an additional source of funding for the school and to help us sustain our commitment to excellence.  I am pleased to share with you that through your generosity over the course of the past two years, All Saints has received $20,000 in contributions as well as countless hours of volunteer support and prayers that have blessed our efforts.  With these proceeds and your heartfelt support we have taken steps to further enrich the learning environment for our students.  For example, online robotics programming is now a part of our middle school technology curriculum and we are preparing to launch the second phase, i.e. hands-on design of robots as part of an after-school activity starting during the second quarter.  Additionally, we are planning now for the installation of campus-wide WiFi later this year that will position us well for the use of mobile devices integrated across the curriculum.  All of these innovations are only possible because of your strong support.

As we begin our 3rd Annual Fund, I invite you to once again prayerfully consider making a gift to our school.  When you receive the introductory letter and brochure, take a few minutes to consider how you might be able to support us in meeting our goals.  You’ll note that all of the funds from the 2014-2015 Annual Fund will be allocated to STEM programs and mobile technology.  In order to prepare our students for the opportunities of the 21st Century, we recognize that we must increase their access to these learning tools.  Through your gifts of time, talent and treasure, we can make this happen for our students now and into the future.

Report Cards & Parent-Teacher Conferences

On Friday teachers will distribute first quarter report cards to students in grades 1-8 and progress reports for those in Mrs. Izquierdo’s Kindergarten class.  In preparation for the parent-teacher conferences next week, please take some time to review all of the information provided by the teacher, noting any special areas of success or difficulty.  Additionally, we encourage you to speak with your child to determine if there is anything that he or she would like you to address with the teacher.  Please feel free to make a list of any questions or concerns that you wish to discuss during the conference.  While the time for conferences is somewhat limited, the teachers are committed to addressing the development of your child and welcome any questions you might have.  Recognizing that experiences in the home also affect a child’s performance at school, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss any changes in routine, significant events, such as the death of a close relative or pet, or any other occurrences that might be affecting your child.  The better the teacher understands the specific needs of each of the children, the better he or she will be able to assist them in their learning.

Rather than being assigned a conference time with the homeroom teacher, middle school parents may stop by at their convenience for a meeting with any of the middle school teachers. Five to ten minute mini-conferences will be held from 8:00 a.m. – Noon and 1:00 p.m. -5:00 pm. on Monday, November 10th and from 1:00 -5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11th(Note:  It is not necessary to schedule an appointment in advance.)

Virtue of the Month ~ Gratitude

During the month of November, students will be encouraged to implement the following strategies:

  1. Thank Jesus each day for the sacrifice He made for you. Look at the crucifix and say, “Thank you, Jesus”.
  2. Thank God for your special talents and use them to serve Him every day.
  3. Remember to say “Please” and “Thank you”.
  4. Show gratitude to all of your teachers.
  5. Remember to thank the ladies in the cafeteria for your lunch, milk or for helping you open your juice box or milk container.
  6. Tell your mom and dad you love them.
  7. Make a special effort to show gratitude to someone in your family each day.
  8. Say “Please” and “Thank you” at home.
  9. Thank a friend for being there for you.
  10. Be a good sport when you play.
  11. Thank God for your life, family, food and home each night.

Prayer of the Month

Dear Jesus,

We want to thank You for the many gifts You have given us, especially the gift of Yourself.

Accept our acts of courtesy and care as gifts of love to You.

Help us to imitate Your Mother Mary and to give glory to God through our words and actions.

We ask this in Your Holy Name.

Amen.

Thank you all so much for your efforts. Please don’t stop clipping. I know we can beat our numbers from last year. Thank you!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Veterans Day Celebration

Join us as our school community honors the commitment of the men and women who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces. We cordially invite all active duty, reserve, former and retired military personnel to attend our school Mass on Tuesday, November 11th at 8:30 a.m. Following the Mass, there will be a brief ceremony in the Parish Activity Center and a reception for our honored guests in Meeting Room 1.

As an additional sign of our support for the military, the children are invited to bring to school any candy that they may wish to donate to active duty servicemen and women.  Mrs. Cole, one of our school parents, has offered to package and ship all of the contributions on our behalf.  Candy donations may be delivered to classroom teachers through Tuesday, November 11th.

Thanksgiving Luncheon

The schedule for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is as follows:

11:00-11:40     Grades 6-8

11:40-12:20     Grades 4-5

12:20-1:00       Grades 2-3

1:00-1:40         Grades K-1

The arrival process will be the same as prior years with parents reporting directly to their son/daughter’s classroom.  There, they will wait with their children, and when called by grade level, report to the cafeteria via the Father Kelley Wing.

So that the kitchen staff may begin planning for the event, please be sure to return your order form no later than Thursday, November 20th.  We do hope that you will join us for this Thanksgiving tradition!
