After weeks of preparation, the All Saints Drama Club delighted student and parent audiences with two presentations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland on Thursday, February 27th. Wonderfully acted, the shows captured the mad-cap quality of this classic tale.
A group of enthusiastic students and their parents joined Mr. Redman and family on Saturday morning to take on an HGTV inspired facelift of the All Saints boys and girls locker rooms. Walls were scrubbed, prepped and painted, lockers were removed, primed and transformed with “All Saints” blue paint. Later this week, members of our parish maintenance team will be hanging large white boards (donated by the All Saints Religious Education Program), the perfect touch for mapping out the winning play.
It’s a project that Mr. Redman was excited to make a reality with the help of student and parent volunteers working together. A few more finishing touches may be in the works so stay tuned!
In December 2013, the National Catholic Education Association announced that Mrs. Vickie Coyle, our librarian, had been selected to receive the Distinguished Teacher Award.
The following is a link to an article in the Arlington Catholic Herald highlighting Mrs. Coyle’s great work and the recognition she is now receiving…. Wonderful reading as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week!
Children’s book author Sister Maria Grace Dateno, FSP is visiting All Saints during Catholic School Week on January 29th. She will be speaking about her new Gospel Time Trekker book series for students in 1st through 4th grades. Sister Maria Grace grew up in Springfield, Virginia, and met the Daughters of Saint Paul when she was fifteen years old. She felt God calling her to help people know and love him. Since then, Sister Grace has edited a Catholic children’s magazine (My Friend), authored several children’s books, and now serves in the Pauline Books & Media Center in Alexandria, Virginia.
The six books in the Gospel Time Trekker series offers solid facts about the culture and landscape surrounding these pivotal moments in biblical times. Sister Maria Grace shows kids how they too can enter into the Bible and imagine what it was like to meet Jesus. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear her personal spiritual journey and the inspiration behind her writing process.
As cited in edtechmagazine.com, college degrees of the future will focus on technology, data, security and robotics. A STEM education has never been so valuable, and the need for future employees in these fields is great. Estimates show that by 2018, the U.S. will have over 1.2 million unfilled jobs in science, technology, engineering and math.
Let’s take a look at the related college majors that are expected to flourish in the 21st Century:
The National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) announced today that Mrs. Vickie Coyle, All Saints librarian, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Teacher Award presented by the Elementary Schools Department of the NCEA.
This award was established in 1981 and is presented to one teacher in each of the geographic regions into which the department divides the United States. All Saints is located in Region 4 which includes the states of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.
As a community we rejoice in the recognition that Mrs. Coyle is receiving for her outstanding contributions to Catholic education and for the impact that she has had on the students of All Saints. School principal Mr. David Conroy added, “While I have every confidence that Mrs. Coyle’s instructional leadership has been fundamental to the success of our school, particularly in the area of reading and language arts, the commitment to life-long reading that she has fostered in her students is the greater gift. Perhaps what has made her so effective is the wonderful sense of joy and aplomb that she brings to all of her endeavors. With a sparkling sense of humor and a radiant personality, the students are inspired by her commitment, her positive outlook and her steadfast belief in them. Indeed, Mrs. Coyle has helped to transform our school and lead our community from good to great.”
On behalf of All Saints Catholic School, congratulations, Mrs. Coyle! Let the celebration begin!
We are pleased to announce that All Saints Catholic School and Leidos have formed a partnership in support of a robotics program for our middle school students. With generous funding provided by Leidos through Project Lead the Way, we are now well positioned to enrich our curriculum with a program designed to advance the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
As part of our emerging STEM initiative, all 7th and 8th grade students will participate in virtual robotics in the computer lab through a web-based program designed at Carnegie Mellon and purchased with proceeds from the Annual Fund. As students develop skills related to design and programming, those interested also have an opportunity to participate in Robotics Club, a hands-on after school activity.
We are confident that this new STEM program will foster greater interest in these fields of study and introduce our students to potential career paths for the 21stCentury. We are grateful for the generosity of Leidos and wish to thank for the organization and its employees for their commitment to education.
