The All Saints Band once again earned the highest ratings at the 2017 Arlington Diocese Band Festival, with judges awarding our band’s performance with a Superior rating. The auditorium at Bishop Ireton High School was filled with All Saints band parents and guests from other schools. Both the beginner and advanced bands are now looking forward to performing at the High Note Music Festival at Hershey Park. Congratulations to our advanced band for making this our 39th straight Superior Rating at the festival. Thank you, Mr. Ward and Mr. Sawasky for your leadership and commitment to excellence in the program!

12th Annual Race for Education
Preparations are now underway for the 12to Annual Carrera por la Educación which will be held on Thursday, May 4th. A packet of important information related to the event was distributed to students at a special assembly on Monday afternoon. Our goal for this year’s Carrera por la Educación is $50,000. As is our tradition, we will continue to donate 15% of the proceeds to St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, an organization that has received more than $100,000 from our community since the 1990’s. The remaining funds from the 12to Annual Carrera por la Educación will be allocated to PTO initiatives and the advancement of technology.
Students are asked to submit completed mailing labels by Monday, February 13to. For additional information about this process and the incentives offered to students, please see the information packet. Should you have any questions, please contact the event coordinator, Mrs. Marjorie Collins, at 703-365-9686.

It's Restaurant Week!
Did you know it’s “Restaurant Week” in fifth grade? Students are putting their math skills into real world application by learning how math is used in a restaurant setting, from learning how to calculate a tip using percentages and decimals to understanding how to double a recipe using fractions.
The connection to everyday life doesn’t stop there. Students are learning social skills related to restaurant etiquette and developing cultural awareness by investigating how McDonald’s restaurants tailor their menu based on their global location. To round out the week, each fifth grader will participate in a “book tasting” to showcase their summarizing skills.
During the book tasting, students will write a short synopsis of a novel or short story to give others an overview of their book. After leaving these written summaries on their desks, students will travel to the other desks in their classroom to get a taste of each book. Based on the results of their “tasting,” students select the novel or short story that interests them the most.
All Saints fifth graders give Restaurant Week a thumbs-up, superior review. What a fun way to learn!
