Mr. Redman is introducing a new theme in Physical Education (PE) classes this year centered around the idea of Eagle Pride. The new theme will serve several functions. It will be a behavioral signal when students need to stop talking, stop moving, etc. “I am instructing students to be ready for my signal of ‘Eagle,’ explains Mr. Redman, “and they will respond with ‘Pride.’ ”

Eagle Pride will also support lessons in attitude and effort. Instead of being a “chicken that can’t get off the ground,” Mr. Redman encourages students to “have the right attitude which determines your altitude and allows you to soar!”

Mr. Redman’s hand-painted Eagle is currently featured on the PE bulletin board in the gym. He will also be tying in the concept of Eagle Pride with achievements in the new Eagle Pride quarterly PE newsletter.

The All Saints Drama Club, led by Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Zwisler, was a delight to watch this morning in back-to-back performances of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest y Taming of the Shrew. Audience members from 4-5 for The Tempest and grades 6-8 for Taming of the Shrew were rapt with attention as they followed the movement and storyline of each play.

The Tempest
The Tempest is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place. He conjures up a storm to lure his corrupt brother Antonio and King Alonso of Naples to the island. Led by Vanessa Morgan as the sorceress Prospera, the cast included 18 students with characters as diverse as the spirit Arial (Eirian Crocker) and the lurid monster Caliban (Jack Tessier).

Taming of the Shrew
Taming of the Shrew  is the story of true love that starts out with the insults of a shrew (Kate) and the brash retorts of her suitor (Petruchio). Kate must be married before her sister, Bianca can even think of being a bride. Will Kate be married soon enough, and will she survive the taming campaign of her husband? This large cast of 23 students worked well together, featuring Kate (Natalie Collier) as the difficult sister and confident Petruchio (Gabriel Cabello) as her would be suitor.

Annaliese Tamke served as Mistress of Revels for both plays, and the “Can’t Do Without Stage Crew” led by Joey Gould and Elizabeth Orsi, included Zoe Callen on sound, Drew Rice and Jack Tessier on lights, and props master Josh Dawson.

The Drama Club is made up of All Saints students from seventh and eighth grade. The club was particularly ambitious this year, bringing not one but two classic plays to the stage. Throughout both performances this morning, the actors delivered their lines with clarity and enthusiasm, and impressed all with the way they brought Shakespeare to life for those in attendance.

The Drama Club will be back with an evening performance of both plays on Wednesday, May 6th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activity Center.

All Saints was pleased to welcome NBC4 Meteorologist and author Tom Kierein back to All Saints for a fun and informative weather assembly for students in kindergarten through third grade, Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Honkus arranged the visit in conjunction with the students’ study of weather in science.

During his interactive presentation, Mr. Kierein discussed the causes of various types of weather, how computer models of the atmosphere help predict the weather, and the importance of keeping safe in bad weather. He also showed students pages from a 3-D book that he published about weather.

We learned that Mr. Kierein’s favorite weather is snow, because it is the most challenging to accurately predict. To keep everyone informed about the weather, Mr. Kierein begins each day quite early to assess the latest weather patterns, and takes the equivalent of a seven question test each day focused on what the weather will be like for the week to come.

Enjoyed by students and faculty alike, this look at weather was both interesting and engaging. We wish to thank Mr. Tom Kierein for taking time out of his busy day to spend the morning with All Saints and to share his knowledge and insights with our students!

What an interesting and fact-filled morning for our fourth grade students who had the privilege of meeting Villanova University professor Dr. Steven Goldsmith and learning about his upcoming trip to Antarctica. Dr. Goldsmith will be traveling near the South Pole to an area called the McMurdo Dry Valleys. This row of snow-free valleys in Antarctica represent an extreme desert environment, making them the perfect backdrop to Dr. Goldsmith’s scientific work involving rocks, water and minerals.

Currently summer in Antarctica (with average temperatures approximately 26.8 degrees), melting snow and ice cause running streams of water to form in the region. Dr. Goldsmith and other scientists on the expedition will collect water samples and mud samples to test the chemistry of the stream and mud. He will also bring back dirt samples that Villanova students will test to determine the origin of the dirt that sweeps into that area of Antarctica. The McMurdo Dry Valleys are believed to be the closest environment on earth to Mars. Experiments related to this expedition will be used to help scientists working on experiments with the Mars Rover.

Mrs. Coyle and many members of our faculty and administration spent their Easter break a little differently this year. After traveling to Pittsburgh, they attended the National Catholic Educational Association’s (NCEA) national convention where Mrs. Coyle was presented with a 2014 Distinguished Teacher Award for her dedication and commitment to teaching excellence.

Mrs. Coyle was chosen from the more than 100,000 teachers who teach in the nation’s Catholic elementary schools and was recognized during a ceremony at the NCEA annual convention on April 22 in Pittsburgh, PA. The annual award honors teachers who have demonstrated a strong Catholic educational philosophy as well as exceptional ability and dedication.

“Each of these outstanding educators embodies the very best of Catholic education,” said Kathy Mears, executive director of the NCEA Department of Elementary Schools. “Their commitment to academic excellence and dedication to young people are the reasons parents choose Catholic schools.”

This week’s edition of the Gainesville Times included a front page photo story featuring All Saints students hard at work mulching trails, clearing brush and picking up litter at Bristoe Battlefield on April 5th in Bristow, VA. Their efforts were in support of National Park Day, an annual event that invites volunteers from around the country to help maintain and preserve Civil War battlefield sites. This marks the 9th year that All Saints students have participated in Park Day under the direction of middle school social studies teacher Mrs. Slovenkay. Previous years, students have helped maintain trails and cleared debris and trash at the Liberia Mansion and Signal Hill historic sites.

“The preservation of the Civil War sites is very relevant to our 7th grade history curriculum,” shares Mrs. Slovenkay. “It also reinforces the importance of good citizenship learned in 7th and 8th government lessons.” Being an environmental steward also ties into All Saints active virtue program as it provides students with a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate their civic virtues.

Adds Mrs. Slovenkay, “When I take students to this annual event, it is my fervent wish that children experience the great satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment when they give back to their community and that they will continue to responsibly participate in their communities. Just as we live our faith at All Saints, we live good citizenship as well.”

All Saints wrapped up its 2013-14 CYO basketball and cheerleading seasons with tournament games in early March.

Congratulations to all of the coaches and students who participated in the CYO sponsored basketball program this year.  The following is a list of the standings at the end of the diocesan-wide tournament.

After weeks of preparation, the All Saints Drama Club delighted student and parent audiences with two presentations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland on Thursday, February 27th. Wonderfully acted, the shows captured the mad-cap quality of this classic tale.

In December 2013, the National Catholic Education Association announced that Mrs. Vickie Coyle, our librarian, had been selected to receive the Premio al Maestro Distinguido.
