Principal’s Message

This week I would like to provide you with a brief update regarding our Title I program, a federally funded initiative that provides services to benefit students in lower grades who are not yet showing mastery in math and/or reading.  In order to qualify for the program, students must be residents of the City of Manassas or live within the jurisdiction of a Title I zoned school in Prince William County and meet specific academic criteria.  This year approximately two dozen students will benefit from small group instruction by our Title I teacher, Mrs. Laura Fitzpatrick.

As we focus on differentiation in all of our classrooms, Title I continues to be a highly effective program for us in that it specifically targets the learning needs of students.  Should you have any questions about this program or your child’s eligibility, please do not hesitate to contact the office for more information.

PowerSchool & Access to Assignments
This year we have implemented a web-based version of PowerSchool that now allows faculty remote access.  However, it has come to our attention through the diocese that there is a system error that results in parents being unable to view assignments except through the mobile app.  The diocese is working to identify a solution as soon as possible.  We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we resolve this discrepancy.

Middle School Program ~ The Gift of Human Sexuality
Central to the mission of Catholic education is a commitment to the formation of the whole person within the light of the teachings of the Gospel.  At All Saints our effort to educate all dimensions of the child ~ spiritual, intellectual, social, and emotional, has been an essential and consistent element of our mission.

As a Catholic school, All Saints also affirms the role of parents as the primary educators of their children and we are privileged to have the opportunity to work with you as partners in this regard.  During the past several years, we have grown increasingly concerned about the many confusing messages that society as a whole, and the media in particular, place before the young people of today, particularly in regards to the topic of human sexuality.  In this day and age it is increasingly important that we insure that the children learn the beautiful teachings of the Church on this topic and that they fully realize and understand the gift of human sexuality within this framework.  Not to share this information with the children leaves them unprepared for the world they face and the many choices that await them in the years ahead.

All Saints Catholic School has implemented a middle school family life curriculum that supports our goal of educating the whole child.  The program is coordinated by the Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry, Mr. Kevin Bohli, and is tailored to the specific needs of each school community. The program consists of a parent presentation during which Mr. Bohli provides an outline of his presentations as well as resources for parents.  Following this presentation, he and an associate, Ms. Carmen Briceno, will meet with the students for three one hour lessons designed to provide the children with an understanding of the Church’s teachings on the topic of human sexuality.

One of the advantages of this program is the involvement of outside professionals.  In addition to their expertise and experience, Mr. Bohli and Ms. Briceno are unfamiliar to the students, which may put the students at greater ease in asking questions and discussing this topic.  A second advantage of this program is that it is designed to take place in a single-sex setting; Mr. Bohli will address the boys and Ms. Briceno will speak with the girls.  Finally, in accordance with diocesan policy, this program is designed as an opt-in opportunity for parents and students.  Accommodations will be made for those children whose parents prefer that they not participate in the program.

Parents of middle school students are invited to a presentation to be held on Wednesday, October 5th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center.  As this is such a very important topic related to the development of your child, we ask that at least one parent from each family new to the middle school be present at the meeting.  Should you have any questions about this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact the office for more information.

PTO MEETINGS
Throughout the year, the PTO holds two different type of meetings: General Assembly Meetings (GAM) and Executive Board Meetings (EBM).

General Assembly Meetings are held four to five times a year. The first meeting was included in the PAC portion of Back to School Night in early September. The remaining meetings will have a specific topic and a speaker. The schedule for this school year is the following:

Tuesday October 18, 7pm –Technology & Learning, Mr. Conroy
Tuesday, February 21, 7pm– Family Math Night, sponsored by Micron
Tuesday, April 25, 7pm – To be announced

Executive Board Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the PLC (2nd floor of school above the front office). They are open to ALL parents. There is a traditional agenda with reports given by the President, VP, Treasurer, Faculty Representative and each standing Committee. Mr. Conroy gives a very informative Principal’s report. Any parent coordinating a PTO event, is welcome to give a report (Evening with Saint Nick, Junior Achievement, and Spirit Nights etc….) EBMs offer a unique glimpse into the life and culture of the school.  All parents are welcome to attend.  Check the school web calendar to verify the date, time and location each month.  If you attend, there’s a good chance you will find a volunteer opportunity which fits your talents and schedule at the meeting!

Attendance at any PTO meeting earns shares. 1 hour = 1 share.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Family Directory
The final deadline for submitting information to be included in the 2016-2017 Family Director is Wednesday, September 28th.

Parents interested in having their contact information published in our annual school directory are asked to confirm this by selecting “yes” or “no” for each of the corresponding data fields found on the PowerSchool directory page.  Note: Please be sure to confirm this information for each of your children enrolled since the database compiles information based upon each student rather than by family.  Also, please be mindful that, in the event that a parent does not provide a response, the database will automatically default to the selections from the previous year.

From the Spirit Event Committee
The first Spirit Event will be held this Friday, September 23rd at Chick-fil-A on Liberia Avenue in Manassas.  The event lasts from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.  You can stop in for breakfast before school.  There will be a 12:00dismissal that day, and it’s the perfect spot for lunch, whether it is on-the-run using the drive-thru or inside with a play area for the little ones.  You can also come for dinner to save cooking that night.  Remember to mention All Saints as we earn 20% of the proceeds.  We hope to see you there!  (See flyer linked below.)

New this year, Skate-n-Fun Zone has created a Spirit Event fundraiser.  We will be having 4 skating parties, which are at a special price.  It costs $8 and that includes admission, skate rental, a slice of pizza, a 12 oz. drink, and 4 tokens.  Please bring the flyer with you to receive this special price.  After we host the 4 parties, our school will receive a check for $1000, which will be greatly appreciated.  The first party will be held on Sunday, September 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. We hope you can join us for the parties!  (See flyer linked below.)
