Principal’s Message

As part of our five year strategic plan, last spring the faculty completed an evaluation of our existing Virtues Program and proposed the adoption of an entirely new approach – Virtues in Practice, a resource designed by the Nashville Dominicans.

We are excited about this new program as we believe that it will provide our students with an even stronger and more substantive understanding of Catholic virtues. During the 2016-2017 academic year, we will focus on virtues that are part of the Year of Faith, the first of a three year cycle. In addition to providing ideas for putting the virtue into practice each day, the program also identifies specific saints by grade level who exemplified the virtue of the month.

Here is a brief overview for the month of September:

Year of Faith (Theme: Service)
Virtue for September – Faith (Believing in God and all He has revealed)
Saints for the Month – St. Martin (PK-2); St. Jerome (3-5); St. Augustine (6-8)

The following link provides an overview of the program as well as parent resources, all of which can be found in the “Parent Guide”. As we begin the month of September, I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the strategies for reinforcing the virtue of “Faith” and to select one or two as a family commitment. Making this a monthly priority within your family will profoundly impact the spiritual formation of your children and more than any other effort, foster habits of virtue.

Formation in Christian Chastity Program
The safety of your children is always a top priority at All Saints. In recent years, in accordance with national initiatives and diocesan policy, we have taken additional steps to do our part to ensure that your children are in a safe place when they are participating in a program at All Saints Catholic School. The Formation in Christian Chastity Program serves as an additional measure to assist us in establishing and maintaining a safe environment for our students. As outlined in the materials, information is provided primarily to parents as a resource to be used in the formation of their children. There is one classroom lesson for students in grades one through four and two lessons for those in grades five through eight.

We will be integrating the objectives of the program into our religion lessons in these grades during the next three weeks. The entire curriculum can be accessed through the diocesan website: www.arlingtondiocese.org. (Click on the Child Protection tab found under the heading of Education. To view the grade level lesson plans, click on Training Programs followed by the tab for the Formation in Christian Chastity Program.)

You are encouraged to spend some time reviewing this information yourself and to then share pertinent aspects with your children. Each of the “rules” contains some application to common sense safety tips that you may wish to share with your children. Other parts of the “rules” apply to some of the decisions that you make as parents for the safety of your children. A question and answer section provides some suggestions as to how you might best address these concerns with your children. Our goal is to equip both you and your children with the knowledge that can help to keep them safe.

The essential point is that parents need to be involved with their children. The more you know about the daily events of your child’s life, the better you are able to spot any danger signs that may surface. The more regular communication you have with your children, the freer they are to come to you with their concerns.

Should you have any questions about the Formation in Christian Chastity Program or about the classroom lessons, please do not hesitate to let us know. In the event that you would prefer to not have your child participate in the classroom training, please contact the front office to request an opt-out form.

Family Directory
Parents interested in having their contact information published in our annual school directory are asked to confirm this by selecting “yes” or “no” for each of the corresponding data fields found on the PowerSchool directory page. Note: Please be sure to confirm this information for each of your children enrolled since the database compiles information based upon each student rather than by family. Also, please be mindful that, in the event that a parent does not provide a response, the database will automatically default to the selections from the previous year.

Middle School Back to School Night (September 15th @ 7:00 p.m.)
Back to School Night for parents of students in grades 6-8 will take place on Thursday, September 15th beginning at 7:00 p.m. Parents are asked to report directly to their son or daughter’s homeroom classroom rather than the Parish Activity Center.

1st student milk purchased will cost $0.18 (subsidized)
2nd (or more) student milk purchased on same day will cost $0.35

Family Stewardship Program Update
In the summer of 2015, a parent committee met to review the school’s “Points for Parents” volunteer program. The goal of the committee was to accomplish the following:

•Increase volunteerism to fulfill the diverse need of the school.
•Reiterate that school volunteer hours are an extension of the virtue of stewardship.
•Clarify and equalize the value of volunteer hours and donations.
•Provide a one-site signup and tracking system which reflects the diversity of volunteer opportunities for any parent’s situation.
•Design a program which reflects a respect for the value of parent’s time.

The committee reviewed over a hundred volunteer programs at Catholic Schools locally and nationwide as well as survey results from All Saints parents. The result of the committee was the design of the “Family Stewardship Program.” In the Family Stewardship Program, each family is asked to complete 25 shares a school year. One share is defined as any of the following:

•One Hours of volunteerism (on or off-site)
•One homemade food item
•A donation of $15 in merchandise (can be cumulative over several items)

At the end of the 2016 school year, the committee conducted a follow-up survey to evaluate if the design of the Family Stewardship Program met the goals set the prior year. Overall, it was concluded that the new program has achieved the set goal. Volunteerism has increased in the school and previously unfilled positions and requests were now being fulfilled. The design of the program has drastically simplified, clarified and equalized volunteer hours and donations. The online Help Counter software has created a reasonable one-site signup and tracking system at a minimal cost.
Thank you to all parents who took time to complete surveys. All suggestions, anecdotes and opinions were read and considered within the set goals. It is clear on a daily basis that one of the factors in making All Saints a great school is the commitment from the parents to continue to offer their time, talent and treasure.

Pilgrim Virgin Statue Rotation~ Sign up Now to Host Statue in your Home
Beginning in October, the month devoted to the Holy Rosary, All Saints School families are invited to renew their devotion to Jesus through Mary in a special way. Families who wish to participate can sign up online at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F084CAEAB22A02-pilgrim.

While the statue of the Blessed Mother is in the home, families are encouraged to pray together either part of or the entire 5-decade rosary for the intentions of our school as well as for your private intentions. Included with the statue you will find DVDs of “The Day the Sun Danced” and “The Miracle of Fatima,” both of which present the message of Fatima entrusted to three peasant children in Portugal in 1917.
