The Sentinel – February 3, 2016

Principal’s Message

Tomorrow each family will receive Re-Registration Forms for the 2016-2017 academic year.   Parents are asked to complete all of the forms and return them to the office no later than Friday, February 19th.

Registration of students new to All Saints, including siblings who will be eligible by age for Pre-Kindergarten, has already begun.  Separate forms related to this initial registration process have been sent home to parents who have already expressed interest in enrolling another child in our program.  If you are interested in enrolling another child from your family and have not yet requested forms, please contact Mrs. Joyce D’Eugenio at 703-393-1490 or office@allsaintsva.org.

During the past five years the school has identified two financial goals that have been key considerations in the design of the annual budget: 1) increasing faculty salaries to 75% of the current scale for Manassas City Public Schools and 2) slowing the rate of tuition increase so as to maintain a high degree of affordability.

We have made significant strides in both of these areas.  As a result, 56% of our teachers are now compensated at or above the 75% benchmark and All Saints remains a tremendous value for families in the Manassas region.  Through the financial investment of the parish and with the generous support of the PTO and community at large, we continue to provide a first-class educational environment at an affordable price for families in our community.

As we plan for the upcoming year, it is our goal to continue to provide the same commitment to excellence, the same level of service, and the same quality that you have come to associate with the All Saints’ experience.  At the same time, we want to continue to bolster salaries for our faculty and staff who are so dedicated to our mission.

In order to sustain these commitments, we will increase tuition by 2.5% and reduce the rate of sibling discount by 1% for the 2016-2017 academic year.  Pre-Kindergarten tuition will increase from $2700 to $2850.

The following is a list of the in-parish tuition rates for 2016-2017.

1 Child             $5,581

2 Children        $9,097

3 Children        $12,390

4 Children        $15,683

Diocesan Policy Change – VIRTUS Training Requirements

The Arlington Diocese has recently announced that the requirement for annual updates to the original live VIRTUS training has been revised.  Employees and volunteers will now complete the program only every three years.  Additionally, the video will be provided to each individual electronically via an email notification on the date of their training anniversary.  For this reason, upcoming VIRTUS update sessions have been cancelled.

Snow Day Policy & the Need for Make-Up Days

In accordance with diocesan policy, our school is required to make-up the first three days of instruction that are cancelled due to inclement weather. These three days have in fact been factored into the All Saints school calendar at the end of the year.  While there remains the possibility for additional cancellations, the diocese has confirmed that there is no need at this time to schedule any additional make-up days.  As such, our calendar remains unchanged and the final day of school at this time will be June 17th.

11th Annual Race for Education!

Preparations are now underway for the 11th Annual Race for Education which will be held on Thursday, May 5th.  A packet of important information related to the event will be distributed to students at a special assembly on Friday morning. When reviewing the information packet, you will note that our goal for this year’s Race for Education is $50,000.  As is our tradition, we will continue to donate 15% of the proceeds to St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, an organization that has received more than $100,000 from our community since the 1990’s.   The remaining funds from the 11th Annual Race for Education will be allocated for resources to support student learning initiatives and faculty enrichment.

Students are asked to submit completed mailing labels by Friday, February 12th.  For additional information about this process and the incentives offered to students, please see the information packet.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the event coordinator, Mrs. Marjorie Collins, at 703-365-9686.

Science Fair Winners!

Congratulations to our 7th & 8th grade students on the successful completion of the Science Fair!  Over the course of the past several months, our students have learned about the scientific process while gaining experience in the management of long-term projects as well as public speaking.  Thank you, Mrs. Woolfrey and Mrs. Cottingham, for leading our students through this complex process and for supporting them each step of the way.    A complete listing of the Science Fair winners is linked to this week’s newsletter.

February Virtue of the Month – Honesty

  1. Admit when you do something wrong.  Don’t put the blame on others.
  2. Do all of your own work and put your best effort into it.  Don’t look at other student’s papers.
  3. Be true to your word and your beliefs.
  4. If you forget your homework, tell the truth.  Accept the consequences.
  5. If you find money try to find out who it belongs to.
  6. Always ask before borrowing something.
  7. Give back what you borrow in good condition.
  8. Be honest when you correct your own paper or someone else’s.  Circle all the mistakes.
  9. If you make a promise, keep it.

Prayer of the Month

Lord Jesus,

You know me well and you see what is going on in my heart.

I am sure you understand me and want to help me.

Please give me the courage to resist temptations of all kinds,

and practice the virtue of Honesty in all I think, say, and do.

Let your Spirit rekindle in my heart the desire to act right,

and give me wonderful ideas to help others act right too.

Amen.

Paul VI (PVI) Catholic High School’s Girls’ Basketball Program

Coach Scott Allen and the Lady Panthers would like to invite players, coaches and families to the rescheduled 2016 YOUTH BASKETBALL NIGHT on Friday, February 5. The ‘Snowzilla’ blizzard caused the rescheduling of our Youth Basketball Night and it will be combined with our annual THINK PINK NIGHT for breast cancer awareness.

PVI will host Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) rival Good Counsel and all players (girls and boys) wearing a team jersey along with all children under 12 will be admitted to the game free. Please wear your favorite pink clothes and let’s color the gym in pink for breast cancer awareness!

The evening will be exciting and entertaining for the entire family. It can also be a fun way for younger players to learn as they can watch more experienced athletes play the game. Immediately after the game, the children will meet the Lady Panthers and sign autographs.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements

As part of the diocesan initiative to maintain a safe environment for all of our children, all volunteers with “substantial contact” with children are required to complete a background check prior to working in the school and to complete VIRTUS training within 45 days of commencing service.  To register for an upcoming training, please visit www.virtus.org.

In accordance with diocesan policy, full compliance for an adult parent volunteer is not required for open events.  (An open event is one that is open to the public, infrequent and publicized, such as Field Day, concerts and special events/assemblies.)  However, full compliance is required for adult parent volunteers who wish to participate in closed events.  (A closed event is one that is not entirely open to the general public such as classroom activities, parties, field trips, etc.)  For this reason, all parents who wish to attend field trips or volunteer in support of classroom activities are required to complete the background check process and attend VIRTUS training.

Register for the training course at www.virtus.org for the upcoming session:

Tuesday, February 16th, St. Theresa School in Ashburn at 9:00 a.m.

Saturday, February 27th, St. James School in Falls Church at 9:30 a.m.

In accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school.  Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office.
