Principal’s Message

This past weekend school parents, parishioners and community members gathered for A Romantic European Evening, the theme of our annual Auction & Casino event.  Once again, it was a time of wonderful fellowship, fine food, exciting auction items and casino-style games, all in support of our school.

Such a large-scale fundraiser was only made possible through the dedication of a hard-working team.   I wish to thank the following members of the PTO who contributed to the success of the evening:  Mrs. Rebecca Johnson (Auction/Casino Chair), Mrs. Michelle Suppers (PTO President), Mrs. Kristi Hernandez (PTO Ways and Means Chair), Mrs. Katherine Mills (PTO Hospitality Chair) and Mrs. Marjorie Collins and Mrs. Carol Rice, both of whom have held a variety of roles through the years and generously shared their experience and expertise.  I also want to thank Mr. Rob Tessier (Youth Minister & Middle School Religion Teacher) for once again bringing a great deal of energy and humor to his role as auctioneer.  Finally, I wish to acknowledge and thank the catering team of Pampa’s Fox who prepared and served a first-class meal with European flair.  Thank you to everyone who contributed and to those who supported the event through their attendance.

The Cafeteria Staff did a tremendous job of feeding approximately 850 students, parents and staff who joined us for the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon yesterday.  I want to thank them for their dedication and professionalism in coordinating such a large undertaking for our community.  Beginning at around 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning, they worked through the day to prepare the great feast.  I want to extend a special word of thanks to Mrs. Wendy Matner (Director of Cafeteria Services), Mrs. Liz Werling (Assistant), Mrs. Wilma Marsengill (Cafeteria Bookkeeper) and Mrs. Robin Speicher (Assistant).

The success of the luncheon was also made possible through the steadfast support of volunteers, many of whom return each year to offer assistance.  As so many of our volunteers have been supporting the effort through the years, they have specific experience and know exactly what needs to be done.  As such, the entire operation runs smoothly with staff and parents working hand in hand.  I especially wish to thank Mrs. Gina Michak for assisting with the decorating and set-up and Mr. Billy Pell for slicing the turkeys and refilling the serving tables during the event.  Both of them are former school parents who, though their children are no longer enrolled, returned to help us for yet another year.

I also want to extend a word of appreciation to the members of our maintenance team who worked diligently behind the scenes in support of the event.  Without their commitment, the event would not have been the success that it was.  Thank you, Mr. Bill Andre (Director of Facilities), Mr. Alex Paul, Mrs. Myra Hayde and Mr. Javier Enriquez.

One of the highlights of the luncheon is the fact that our parish priests assist with the serving of food.  We thank them for their continued care and commitment to the school as so clearly evidenced by their support and involvement.

This week I also wish to share with you the news that Mrs. Jillian Roth, our school nurse, has accepted a new position as a primary charge nurse at a hospital beginning in January.  While we are sad to see her leave our school, we congratulate her on this wonderful opportunity for professional growth and advancement.  Thank you, Mrs. Roth, for your dedication and the compassionate care that you provided to students, faculty, staff and parents during your years with us.

As we pause from our daily labors to join family and friends and to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday, please know of my gratitude for your continued support of our school and its mission of providing an education of faith and academic excellence.  Thank you for choosing our school for your family.  Happy Thanksgiving!

A Prayer of Thanksgiving:

May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face to shine upon us.

The earth has yielded its increase;

God, our God, has blessed us.

May God continue to bless us;

let all the ends of the earth revere him.

            (Psalm 67)

We thank you for your gifts, merciful God,

and we ask you to give all people the food they need.

May we all be united one day

in the eternal singing of your praises,

through Christ, our Lord.

Applications for New Students (2016-2017)

Current families who wish to enroll a new student in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight for the 2016-2017 academic year are invited to request an application via email at the following address:

As requests are received, applications will be sent home to families with the youngest child currently enrolled in our school.  As in the past, we will continue to give first consideration to current school families before reviewing applications from new families. For this reason, it is important that current families submit their forms in advance of the deadline of February 26th.

Pre-K Families: Important Kindergarten Survey

This week all Pre-Kindergarten parents will receive an electronic survey by which they are asked to confirm their interest in continued enrollment for their child in the Kindergarten program next year.  Although it will still be necessary for parents to complete the re-registration forms in February, this early information is important for our enrollment planning for 2016-2017.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements

As part of the diocesan initiative to maintain a safe environment for all of our children, all volunteers with “substantial contact” with children are required to complete a background check prior to working in the school and to complete VIRTUS training within 45 days of commencing service.  To register for an upcoming training, please visit

In accordance with diocesan policy, full compliance for an adult parent volunteer is not required for open events.  (An open event is one that is open to the public, infrequent and publicized, such as Field Day, concerts and special events/assemblies.)  However, full compliance is required for adult parent volunteers who wish to participate in closed events.  (A closed event is one that is not entirely open to the general public such as classroom activities, parties, field trips, etc.)  For this reason, all parents who wish to attend field trips or volunteer in support of classroom activities are required to complete the background check process and attend VIRTUS training.

Register for the training course at for the upcoming session:

Saturday, December 5th, The Church of St. Veronica in Chantilly at 9:30 a.m.

As we begin a new year, in accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school.  Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office.

The diocese also requires volunteers who have completed the full VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive.  This 30 minute video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school.  The following is a list of upcoming sessions:

Tuesday, Dec. 1st in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 12th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 9th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 11th in Meeting Room 2 at 2:15 p.m.

Tuesday, March 15th in Meeting Room 2 at 7:00 p.m.

We are requesting advance registration by telephone or email for this brief update.  Attendance will be taken to ensure that you receive credit for completing the training.  If you have any questions or to register, please call Mrs. Janet Smith, Virtus Coordinator at the Parish Office, (703) 393-2158 or email her at
