Principal’s Message

Two weeks ago as I was working on my computer, I overheard a little boy at the front office ask his mother, “Is this God’s school?”  I paused, smiled and thought to myself, “Indeed it is!”  Perhaps it was the religious art and photographs in the entranceway, the crucifix in the office, or the thoughtful interactions among the staff that inspired him to recognize that our school is a sacred space.

Each year we identify a theme that serves as a daily reminder of this reality, that the core mission of our school is the spiritual formation of our students and families.  The following is the theme for 2014-2015.

Put on as God’s Chosen Ones, Heartfelt Mercy and Kindness.

Taken from St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, this simple phrase will be a focal point for our year, shaping the culture and climate of our community.

At yesterday’s student assembly, I encouraged the students to put our theme into practice by committing themselves to one act of kindness each day.  In an effort to help the students learn more about our theme, and to make it as meaningful as possible, the homeroom teachers will each be hosting a brief classroom meeting each week.  The dialogue might simply revolve around small group sharings of acts of kindness recently observed or identifying areas for improvement in the classroom.  Rather than incorporating competitions, rewards, or incentives, we will simply foster authentic conversations as we support one another in growing each day in the image and likeness of Christ.  As we take up the cause at school, I invite you to spend some time discussing our theme within your families, recognizing that each small act of kindness and mercy has the capacity to change hearts and lives forever.

I wish to thank the PTO for hosting the 10th Annual Welcome Back Barbecue.  A well-established tradition, the event provides a great opportunity for new and returning parents to gather together and to celebrate the start of the new year.  I want to specifically thank Mr. and Mrs. Rivera for all of their efforts in coordinating the event and for managing the countless details behind the scenes.  I also want to thank Mr. Switzer for again providing the music which always helps to turn the picnic into a party!  Finally, I want to thank the numerous parents who helped with the set-up, serving and clean-up following the event.  It was truly a community effort!

Virtue of the Month

The Virtue of the Month for September will be Respect & Responsibility.  Throughout the first month of school we will adopt the following plan and strive to maintain these objectives throughout the course of the year.

1)      Wear your uniform with pride.

2)      Be reverent and quiet in church.

3)      Greet everyone cheerfully and by name.

4)      Listen quietly when others speak.

5)      Keep your desk and supplies neat.

6)      Stand at attention for the Pledge of Allegiance.

7)      Participate in Mass: Try to learn the responses and sing the hymns.

8)      Do your best work on every assignment.

9)      Turn all class assignments and homework in on time.

Virtue Prayer of the Month

Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.

Emergency Information Form

Please complete the attached diocesan emergency form, one per child, and return it to the office by Friday, September 5th. This form is critically important in that it provides us with the necessary information to contact you in the event of an emergency.  Note:  Please be sure to provide two points of contact in the event of an emergency.

Carpool Network

All Saints parent Mr. Jim Griffin has once again volunteered to serve as a carpool coordinator. If you are interested in a carpool for your children, please email the following information to  Mr. Griffin will put you in touch with other families in your area who have expressed an interest in carpooling.

(Note:  If you have previously submitted your information but have not yet received an email response, please provide the following information to the email address listed above.)

Phone Number:

Preferred email contact:

Number of children you need transported:

Number of spaces in your vehicle for transporting others:

Prefer to drive morning or evening, or no preference?

Please be aware that the above information will be plotted on a map with a private URL that is only available to All Saints parents who have expressed an interest in carpooling.  The URL will be emailed directly to you and will not be available any other way or discoverable by any search engine.

Recognizing that parents are solely responsible for determining transportation arrangements to and from All Saints Catholic School, the school assumes no role in this process and neither recommends nor endorses any particular carpool arrangements.  In the unfortunate circumstance of an accident or injury, the parent’s own personal automobile liability is primary in the event of a claim.  Nonetheless, the school values the collective efforts of parents and is pleased to support this initiative by communicating the opportunity to parents.

Volunteer Opportunity – Playground & Cafeteria Supervision

The school is seeking VIRTUS compliant parents to assist with recess and lunch supervision from 11:10 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  All volunteers will receive training in playground supervision as well as allergy awareness and will earn Points for Parents.  Please contact Mrs. Floribel Fleisig at for more information about this opportunity.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night & PTO Meeting (Parents of Grades 1-5) – Tuesday, September 2nd  beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center.  Following an opening presentation and introduction of the PTO Board, teachers in grades one through five will present an overview of programs in their classrooms.

Middle School Back to School Night (Parents of Grades 6-8) – Thursday, September 11th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center.

These sessions will provide parents with important information about our many programs and plans for the 2014-2015 school year.  For this reason, at least one parent from each family is required to attend the session for their child.

Parent ~ Student Handbooks

The 2014-2015 Parent-Student Handbook can be accessed electronically via our website:  Please take some time to review the policies and procedures of our school and discuss them with your children.  Each family is asked to sign and return the acknowledgment form by Friday, September 5th.  Those families without access to the website are invited to contact the office to request a hard copy of the handbook.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements

As part of the diocesan initiative to maintain a safe environment for all of our children, all volunteers with “substantial contact” with children are required to complete a background check prior to working in the school and to complete VIRTUS training within 45 days of commencing service.  To register for an upcoming training, please visit

In accordance with diocesan policy, full compliance for an adult parent volunteer is not required for open events.  (An open event is one that is open to the public, infrequent and publicized, such as Field Day, concerts and special events/assemblies.)  However, full compliance is required for adult parent volunteers who wish to participate in closed events.  (A closed event is one that is not entirely open to the general public such as classroom activities, parties, field trips, etc.)  For this reason, all parents who wish to attend field trips or volunteer in support of classroom activities are required to complete the background check process and attend VIRTUS training.

As we begin a new year, in accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school.  Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office.

The diocese also requires volunteers who have completed the full VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive.  This 30 minute video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school.  The following is a list of upcoming sessions.

We have scheduled the following opportunities for completing the half-hour VIRTUS update:
Thursday, September 4th in FKH at 7:00 PM

Wednesday, September 10th in the Art Room at 7:00 PM

Tuesday, September 16th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 PM

Thursday, September 18th in Meeting Room 2 at 2:15 PM

Wednesday, September 24th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 PM

Wednesday, October 1st in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 PM

We are requesting advance registration by telephone or email for this brief update.  Attendance will be taken to ensure that you receive credit for completing the training.  If you have any questions or to register, please call Mrs. Janet Smith, Virtus Coordinator at the Parish Office, (703) 393-2158 or email her

(Note:  As Mrs. Smith will be out of the office from September 30th – October 14th, volunteers are encouraged to submit background check forms by September 22nd so that they may be processed in advance.)
