The Sentinel – December 4. 2013

December 4, 2013

Principal’s Message

This week we have begun our annual journey of Advent, a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas.  Amidst all of the joy and activity surrounding the preparations for the season, it is easy for us to lose sight of the fact that Advent is a beautiful season unto itself.

At All Saints we have established several traditions that help to create a tone of anticipation and waiting, in essence a time during which we invite the children to prepare their hearts for the coming of  Christ.

v  Advent Wreath Prayer Services ~ Every Monday morning during Advent the students will gather for prayer around three separate wreaths in each of the wings of the school as we begin our day together.  There, the students and faculty will participate in age-appropriate prayer services through which the children will learn more about the tradition of the Advent wreath and meaning of the season.

v  Sacrament of Reconciliation ~ Each of the students in grades three through eight will have an opportunity to encounter Christ in this beautiful Sacrament of healing and forgiveness.  Our parish priests have scheduled sessions during the school day for each of these grade levels over the course of the next several weeks.

v  Toys for Tots Outreach ~ Donations of unwrapped new toys are now being collected through Tuesday, December 17th.  Collection points are located by the front office and breezeway where students enter the building.

A Prayer for Advent ~ Week I

All-powerful God,

increase our strength of will for doing good

that Christ may find an eager welcome at His coming

and call us to His side in the kingdom of heaven,

where He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

All Saints Christmas Pageant 2013

The students have been working hard to prepare a wonderful Christmas Pageant, and would love for you and your loved ones to attend.  This year’s Christmas Pageant will take place on December 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

If you are the parent of a sixth grader, as six grade is the featured grade, we request that the 6th grade students arrive at 6:30, dressed in their Christmas best.

If you are the parent of a student in K, 1, 2, 4, or 5 grades, we ask that those students arrive at 6:45, so that we can make sure they are seated in the proper area.  Again, please have them dressed in their Christmas best as well!

Please, direct any inquiries to Miss Sartor, at

Virtue of the Month ~ Generosity

During the month of December, students will be encouraged to implement the following strategies:

A.     Give from your own money to help others in need.

B.     Give freely of your time without expecting anything in return.

C.     Ask for forgiveness when you have hurt someone and be willing to forgive them when they hurt you.

D.     Offer to help someone in class each day.

E.      Share your supplies with someone who forgot theirs.

F.      Do something helpful for someone at home without being asked.

G.     See if others want “second helpings” before taking some for yourself.

H.     Let someone else in your family choose the movie or television show you will watch together.

I.        Offer to help an older neighbor with a job like raking leaves or shoveling snow.

J.       Let another person ahead of you get a drink first at the water fountain.

Prayer of the Month ~ Prayer of St. Nicholas

Loving God, we thank you for the example of St. Nicholas, who fed the hungry, brought hope to the imprisoned, gave comfort to the lost, and taught the truth to all.  May we strive to imitate him by putting you first in all we do.  Give us the courage, love and strength of St. Nicholas, so that, like him, we may serve you through loving our brothers and sisters.  Amen.

Bethany Food Pantry Cornucopia Outreach ~ Many Thanks!

Thanks to the generosity of our students and the leadership of the NJHS, our school donated 758.5 pounds of fresh food for our community.  The donations were compiled into dinners that were forwarded to families in need in Manassas.  Thank you for brightening the holiday for those less fortunate.

Book Fair – Another Great Success!

A big thank you goes out to all parents, students, faculty and staff that supported the recent Scholastic Book Fair!  What a great way to have celebrated reading and raise funds for the school library. The theme Reading Oasis: A Cool Place to Discover Hot Books transformed the library back to Ancient Egypt overflowing with hundreds of book treasures just waiting to be discovered.    This fun-filled event could not be accomplished without our devoted All Saints families who graciously volunteered to make the Book Fair a huge success.  A special thanks to Mrs. Gina Michak and Mrs. Johanna Catts for coordinating volunteers. It truly is a team effort.  Your generosity enabled the profits from the Book Fair sales to exceed over $12,000 earning the library $2,500 to spend on books and special school programs.

Our Lady of  Guadalupe Feast Day Mass

All parents are cordially invited to join us for a special Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday, December 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the church.  In an effort to help our students understand the history of the feast day, a small group of students will re-enact the visitation of our Lady to Juan Diego just prior to the start of the Mass.  As Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of Latin America, portions of the liturgy will be in Spanish and the music will be provided by professional mariachis.  We look forward to this multicultural celebration of our faith and hope that many of you will be able to join us for this special occasion.

Open House for 2013-2014 School Year

All Saints Catholic School will host an Open House for prospective parents on Thursday, January 16th beginning at 9:00 a.m.  All parishioners and members of the community interested in learning more about the parish school are cordially invited to attend.  Following a presentation and introduction at 9:00 a.m., tours of the facility will be provided. For more information, please contact Mrs. Joyce D’Eugenio, administrative assistant, at (703) 393-1490.

TARGET/Grocery Programs Update

Thank you to all of the families, friends, and neighbors who have already registered or sent in their grocery registration information.  If you have not already provided your registration information, please complete the 2013-2014 enrollment form and return to school.  The coordinator will take care of registration for you.

We also benefit from Target’s Take Charge of Education program.  The REDcard is an actual debit or credit card.  For security purposes, please visit or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate our school, and then use your REDcard whenever you shop at Target to benefit All Saints.

This is a wonderful way to help All Saints while simply doing your regular shopping!  Attached to today’s newsletter is an updated Target/Grocery Program letter.
