“The Gift of Faith brings us Joy and Hope.”

Principal’s Message

One of our cherished traditions at All Saints is the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, a special meal prepared by the kitchen staff for students, parents, faculty & staff.  Linked to this week’s newsletter is a flyer inviting all of our families to participate in this wonderful celebration of food & fellowship.

In an effort to accommodate all of the families who attend and to reduce wait time, we will again be hosting four lunch seatings this year.  The schedule for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is as follows:

11:00-11:40             Grades 6-8

11:40-12:20             Grades 4-5

12:20-1:00               Grades 2-3

1:00-1:40 Grades K-1

The arrival process will be the same as prior years with parents reporting directly to their son/daughter’s classroom.  There, they will wait with their children, and when called by grade level, report to the gym via the Father Kelley Wing.

So that the kitchen staff may begin planning for the event, please be sure to return your form no later than Thursday, November 15th.  We do hope that you will join us for this Thanksgiving tradition!

2nd Annual Running with the Saints 5K

Only 3 days to the second annual Running with the Saints 5K!  We are thrilled that over 200 people of all ages and abilities will join our priests, teachers and staff for a fun morning! Registration is ongoing thru the day of the race.  You may turn in your forms to the front office or register online at www.runningwiththesaints.org thru THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1st.  You can also register in person on Friday, November 2nd between 2:30pm-7pm (in the school courtyard) or Saturday morning November 3rd at Harris Pavilion between 7am-8am.  We hope to see you there!

Report Cards & Parent-Teacher Conferences

On Friday teachers will distribute first quarter report cards to students in grades 1-8 and progress reports for those in Kindergarten.  In preparation for the parent-teacher conferences next week, please take some time to review all of the information provided by the teacher, noting any special areas of success or difficulty.  Additionally, I encourage you to speak with your child to determine if there is anything that he or she would like you to address with the teacher.  Please feel free to make a list of any questions or concerns that you wish to discuss during the conference.  While the time for conferences is somewhat limited, the teachers are committed to addressing the development of your child and welcome any questions you might have.  Recognizing that experiences in the home also affect a child’s performance at school, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss any changes in routine, significant events, such as the death of a close relative or pet, or any other occurrences that might be affecting your child’s behavior.  The better the teacher understands the specific needs of each of the children, the better he or she will be able to assist them in their learning.

The following is a list of ideas that may prove helpful as you plan for a successful and productive meeting.

Before the Conference

¨       Arrive on time

¨       Bring a written list of questions or points for discussion

¨       Realize that your child may exhibit different behaviors at school than at home

During the Conference

¨       Ask for examples of your child’s work

¨       Discuss specific strengths & weaknesses of your child as a learner

¨       Ask the teacher for specific ways in which you can help at home

¨       Help set two or three specific goals for your child for the next grading period

After the Conference

¨       Share with your child what the teacher reports

¨       Remember that, as a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life.  Give your child a hug and reassurance following the conference.

Seeking Playground & Cafeteria Volunteers – Points for Parents Opportunity!

Needed: Parent volunteers for lunch and recess – must be VIRTUS compliant and have submitted background paperwork.

We are now seeking more parent volunteers to assist staff in monitoring the students during lunch and recess. If you are available for as little as 45 minutes, or as much as 2 hours, once a week, the staff and children would directly benefit from your time and presence. The responsibilities are rather simple….be an extra set of eyes and helping hands.

During recess, parent volunteers assist the staff in monitoring the boundaries, enforce established rules, and help provide typical parental guidance. During rainy days or inclement weather (wind chill or temperatures below 20 degrees), parent volunteers may be asked to supervise a classroom for 20 minutes while the students engage in predetermined activities, watch a movie, etc.

During the lunch period, parent volunteers respond to simple requests of opening milk, distributing utensils, napkins or straws, and discourage food sharing. Grades 2-8 are responsible for cleaning the tables. Staff may also request a volunteer to spray and wipe clean some tables. The lunchroom needs for older children are fewer but it is helpful to have the extra set of eyes.

For those parents who currently commit time each week to help in these areas, their presence helps to ensure lunch relief for the teachers and staff. They truly appreciate it! There are countless benefits to being present at school during your child’s school day! Please consider offering your time each week and earn points.

Grades 6-8             Recess 11:10-11:30

                                Lunch 11:30-11:45

Grades 3-5             Recess 11:45 – 12:05

                                Lunch 12:05-12:30

Grades K-2             Recess 12:15 – 12:35

Lunch 12:35-1:00

For more information or to confirm your interest, please contact Mrs. Marie McVey, Lunch & Recess Volunteer Coordinator.  Those who wish to volunteer are asked to email the specific day(s) and time(s) they are available to help in this area to themcveyfamily@aol.com.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Revised Diocesan Code of Conduct – Requirement for All Volunteers – REMINDER

In response to rapidly changing technology, especially social media, and in order to continue providing a safe environment for our children and youth, the Diocese of Arlington has issued a new Code of Conduct.  This policy makes clear the behaviors that are acceptable and ensures proper monitoring of all young people.

Copies of this new Code of Conduct are available at the School office and the Parish Office.  All clergy, employees and volunteers are required to read and acknowledge this document and return the completed acknowledgments to Janet Smith, Virtus coordinator. Signed acknowledgements were to have been returned by Monday, October 29th in order to continue being eligible to volunteer with children/youth.

Please direct any questions to Janet Smith at the Parish Office (703) 393-2158 or via email at jsmith@allsaintsva.org  Thank you for your cooperation.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements

As we begin a new year, in accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school.  Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office.

We are hosting a live Virtus training seminar (the 4-hour training):          Saturday, November 17th at 9:00AM in FKH

The diocese also requires volunteers who have completed the full VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive.  This 30 minutes video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school.  The following is a list of upcoming sessions.  (Please note:  For planning purposes, volunteers are asked to confirm their intent to attend a session on the voicemail of Mrs. Janet Smith.  703.393.2158)

We have the following opportunities for completing the half-hour Virtus update:
