The Sentinel – Volume 12, Issue 12

Seek Christ in one another; welcome Him into your heart.

Principal’s Message:

This week our diocese celebrates Discover Catholic Schools Week, an annual opportunity for schools to showcase their programs and to promote their distinct mission.  In conjunction with this celebration, All Saints hosted an evening open house two weeks ago, drawing our largest attendance ever for a fall information session.  The reputation of our school in the surrounding community continues to be very strong with the majority of those in attendance at the open house already committed to seeking enrollment for their children in our program.  Many of them have learned about All Saints from current parents who enthusiastically share their experiences.  I thank you for continuing to “share our story” as it has truly helped to grow our enrollment, even during a challenging economic period.

In order for our school to continue to thrive and advance, it is vitally important that we annually consider our progress and identify goals for growth.  One such way that we might receive important feedback from the parent community is via surveys.  The uniform survey of 2010-2011 and the recent graduation survey of 8th grade parents are but two examples of how the consensus opinion of parents has helped to guide the future direction of our school.  Similarly, the annual bullying survey yields critical information as we monitor the climate of the school and seek new strategies each year to address this important issue, a process now underway as we compile the results from those who participated in our fall survey.

This week I wish to invite you to participate in a general survey designed to measure your overall satisfaction with our school and the programs it offers.  Aligned with one of the goals of our five year plan, this initiative is designed to provide faculty, staff and administration with another source of feedback regarding parent perceptions.  After consideration of options available for this purpose, we have decided to use the model of the Ultimate Question or Net Promoter Surveyapproach.  Designed at the Harvard Business School, the survey is widely used and recognized by organizations across our country, including businesses and corporations.  It is purposely designed to be very succinct with a built-in opportunity for open ended responses.  The survey is comprised of one key question:  On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you in recommending All Saints Catholic School to family, friends and acquaintances?  A follow up question based upon each individual’s response yields additional information which can be used in planning future goals for the school.

I do hope that many of you will take a few minutes to respond to this brief survey.  Your candid responses will help to provide an important perspective to us and inform our vision for the future. Most importantly, this tool provides an opportunity to ensure that we are in step with parent perceptions and actively responding to the needs of our community members.  In advance, thank you for your support and participation.

All Saints Satisfaction Survey:

During the two days reserved for Parent-Teacher Conferences, the faculty and staff enjoyed beautiful luncheons prepared by our school families.  On behalf of the entire staff, I wish to thank the many parents who contributed the many delicious foods.  The variety of soups, salads and desserts was truly remarkable and enjoyed immensely by the teachers and staff. I would also like to specifically thank Mrs. Jen Morad and Mrs. Teresa Post who served as coordinators for the two luncheons.  With the support of many generous parents, they hosted first-class events for us.

Thanksgiving Luncheon ~ Schedule & Directions for Parents

Again this year we will be hosting four lunch seatings so as to provide more time and space for families to enjoy this special occasion.  The schedule is as follows:

11:00-11:40             Grades 6-8

11:40-12:20             Grades 4-5

12:20-1:00               Grades 2-3

1:00-1:40 Grades K-1

Parents are asked to arrive and sign in by the front office 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the lunch time for their child’s grade level.  There will be two sign-in tables at the front entrance of the school.

After signing in, parents are asked to report directly to their child’s classroom.  The homeroom teacher will provide guidance as to when families should begin to report to the cafeteria for the luncheon.

Reminder:  Payment for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is due by Thursday, November 17th.

Enrollment Survey for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and New 1-8 Students for 2012-2013

With the demand for Catholic education in our region and the reputation for excellence that our school enjoys, it is important that the office solicit information from current families regarding plans for enrollment in our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for the upcoming year.  We would also like to know if there are any new students for enrollment in grades 1-8. As in the past, we will continue to give first consideration to current school families before reviewing new applications in the spring.

While completion of the attached survey does not guarantee enrollment, it is helpful for us to know how many current families plan to apply for these two programs or if families have a new sibling for grades 1-8 not currently enrolled in our school.  Even if you have a child currently enrolled in the Pre-Kindergarten program, it is important that you notify us of your interest for next year’s Kindergarten.  Please submit all survey responses to the school office by Friday, November 18th

Fall Handcraft Show Hosted by Father Juan Puigbó

Fr. Juan will host a Handcraft Show on Thursday, November 17th from 2pm to 7pm at the entrance of the school gym. A number of items will be on display and available for purchase, including beautiful wooden pieces handcrafted by Fr. Juan. This will be a good opportunity to buy your seasonal gifts!  For more information, please see the flyer linked to this week’s newsletter.

NJHS Operation Turkey

The National Junior Honor Society will again coordinate a canned food drive to provide for the less fortunate in our community during the upcoming holiday season.  The children will have an opportunity to place their donations in front of the altar in the church during our annual Thanksgiving Prayer Service after which the food will be delivered to SERVE.  The students will gather in the church at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22nd for the prayer service.  All school parents are cordially invited to join us as we give thanks to God for the many blessings of this past year.

Family Directories 2011-2012

Copies of the new Family Directory were distributed to the oldest child in each family today.  In the event that you do not receive one, please contact Mrs. Kruppa at the front desk.  Again, this year the document was printed by J.M. Gaske through the financial support of local businesses.  When seeking local services, please take a moment to consider those companies that have shown support for our school by purchasing an advertisement in this annual publication.  We also wish to thank Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. D’Eugenio for again collaborating on the design and layout, resulting in a first-class directory for our families.

Uniform Exchange

During this period of uniform transition, much of the supply for the Uniform Exchange has been depleted with only a limited number of items remaining.  For this reason, the Uniform Exchange will not be hosting a sale in the near future.  However, those parents seeking specific items are invited to contact the coordinator, Mrs. Gemma Brophy, at 703-753-5458 to inquire as to whether a particular article might be in stock.

Graduation Rescheduled ~ Monday, June 11th

As published in our school calendar, graduation had been tentatively scheduled for the evening of Friday, June 8th, a date that presents a conflict for some families for whom an older sibling will be graduating from high school on that same evening.  In the hopes that all families may fully enter into the graduation celebrations being planned for their children, graduation at All Saints has been rescheduled for Monday, June 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the church.  All of the graduation day festivities, including the Pass-it-On Ceremony, Graduation Breakfast, and Walk of Honor will take place that same day.

PTO 3rd Annual “Evening with St. Nicholas

All Saints PTO proudly invites families to the 3rd Annual “Evening with St. Nicholas”, Friday December 2 beginning at 7pm in the church.

Please join us for what has become a beautiful tradition here at All Saints.  The evening will begin with an Advent Prayer Service and traditional Advent carols in the church.  The “Procession of the Shoes” will again be lead by St. Nicholas himself!    St. Nicholas and Mother Seton will be available for photos (bring your own camera) afterwards  in the gym. Cookies and cocoa will be served!

Come out and enjoy this wonderful community-building event, designed to help us prepare for the Advent season.  We ask that you bring a donation of new shoes in honor of St. Nicholas and his feast day.   Monetary donations will also be accepted.  Proceeds will go to House of Mercy.   House of Mercy shoe donation guidelines are :  NEW plain colors of tennis shoes- white, blue, black, tan, or brown.  No character tennis shoes, please.  Can’t make it to the event?   You can still make a donation by leaving it at the front desk, attention :  Gina Michak.

For planning purposes, please visit the “Evening with St. Nicholas” link at and RSVP now!

Volunteers needed! Many hands will be needed to help the day of the event for set-up, decorating, and clean up :

**Set-up and decorating will take place on Friday morning in the gym beginning at 9am.

**Evening shift will start at 5:30pm, with cookie and cocoa table set –up, and assembling the luminaries lining the walkway from the church to the gym.

**After 7pm we will need volunteers to help with traffic flow, assist St. Nicholas, and serve refreshments.

Food donations are needed for the evening’s refreshments. We are asking for Christmas cookies/decorated sugar cookies, (homemade or store bought), cocoa mix  (packets OR canisters) and mini-marshmallows.  Cookies only, please.  While the All Saints School community is always very generous when asked to donate baked goods, the simplicity of a cookie is all we need for this event.  Thank you for your understanding and generosity!
