The Sentinel – Volume 12, Issue 6

Seek Christ in one another; welcome Him into your heart.

Principal’s Message

One month from today the PTO will host the first ever Running with the Saints 5K, an event that will provide an opportunity for our community to celebrate our Catholic heritage while generating additional revenue for our school.  The event will take place in Old Town Manassas, beginning at the Harris Pavilion at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 5th.  With the support of city officials and the local police department, the PTO leadership has been working diligently behind the scenes to plan what we hope will become an annual tradition for our school.  In addition to promoting health and fitness, the 5K run occurs only days after the celebration of the Feast of All Saints.  As such, participants in the event are invited to dress as their favorite saints.  What an extraordinary sight it will be for passersby to see “saints” running through the streets of Manassas!

The Running with the Saints 5K is open to all who wish to participate; the young and not so young, the experienced and the beginner, those from our community and those from beyond.  The event is currently advertised on where those interested can complete the registration process. Additionally, information about the event can be found by clicking on the Running with the Saints 5K link on our homepage.  At a cost of only $25 for adults and $15 for students for advanced registration, the PTO has aimed to keep the event affordable for families.

We hope that many from our community will participate, either by running in the event, offering assistance as a volunteer, or simply “cheering on” friends and acquaintances.  As of today, 13 members of the faculty & staff have already registered.  Please join us for what promises to be an exciting and enjoyable new tradition for our school, the Running with the Saints.

In this first year of the event, we are especially seeking both individual and business sponsorships.   A listing of sponsorship opportunities can be found attached to today’s Sentinel and is also available at our 5K website (  If you own or know of a business who would be interested in sponsoring this exciting event, please contact Christian Cobb at (703) 530-8192  The deadline to submit a sponsorship with recognition on the 5K T-shirts is October 12.

Last week I met with Mr. Bill Ditro, our uniform representative at Flynn & O’Hara.  As announced last week, he will host a measuring day for families of All Saints this Friday from 11:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Parents wishing to have their child measured for uniforms are invited to visit the school during their son/daughter’s lunch recess at which time they may meet their child on the playground and escort him/her to Father Kelley Hall for the measuring.  The recess/lunch schedule is as follows:

11:15 a.m. – Noon                  Grades 6-8

11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.                          Grades 3-5

12:15 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.                           Grades K-2

Parents who are unable to attend the measuring day but wish to order uniforms are invited to submit a completed order form and payment to the office.  (see attached link) Children whose parents submit orders will be escorted to Father Kelley Hall by a member of the staff and measured for winter uniforms. All uniforms ordered on measuring day will be delivered to our school in approximately 2 weeks and distributed to parents upon arrival.  There will not be any inventory available for actual purchase the day of the measuring.

Recognizing the distance that many of our families travel to the store, Flynn & O’Hara is pleased to offer a special service for our community.  Beginning this week, Flynn & O’Hara will ship out of stock orders directly to All Saints, free of shipping.  This means that for in store orders only, in the event that an item is not available, it will be shipped directly to the store and then forwarded to All Saints for pick-up. When visiting the store, should you need to order an out of stock item, be sure to request “in-store pick-up”.  This will ensure that the product is shipped to the Fairfax store.  Upon arrival in the store, the company will automatically send you an email confirming that the item is available for pick-up.  Note: Disregard this message as we will now have a standing arrangement by which all ordered items will be forwarded to All Saints with no shipping charge for parents.  As items arrive at our school office, you will be notified so that you can pick them up at your convenience.

Tomorrow and Friday I will be away on retreat with the principals of our diocese.  As I gather with colleagues in West Virginia for this annual event, please know of my prayers for our school community and the needs of our families.  I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday evening for the first PTO sponsored Bingo of the new year!

October Virtue of the Month ~ Self Discipline

Students will be encouraged to demonstrate the virtue of self-discipline both at school and home through the following strategies:

1)       Follow the rules.

2)       Never interrupt someone who is talking.

3)       Get into and walk in line without talking.

4)       Be responsible for your space in the cafeteria or at the dinner table.

5)       Listen attentively to morning and afternoon announcements.

6)       Keep your feet and hands to yourself.  Never kick or hit anyone.

7)       Say only kind words.

8)       If you get angry, walk away from the situation until you are calm and can discuss it.

Prayer of the Month

Merciful Lord, let your Holy Spirit guide my life so that my soul may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Renew my desire to be your faithful friend and servant, increase my loving dependence on you, and grant me that joy and peace of heart which comes from doing your holy will. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Veterans Day Celebration

Join us as our school community honors the commitment of the men and women who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces. We cordially invite all active duty, reserve, former and retired military personnel to attend our school Mass on Wednesday, November 9th at 8:30 a.m. Following the Mass, there will be a brief ceremony followed by a reception for our honored guests in Father Kelley Hall.  In the weeks ahead the students will receive a packet of information regarding our Veterans Wall Display, an annual tradition by which we show our pride and gratitude for the sacrifices of those in our community who have served our nation through military service.

First Communion ~ Calendar Correction

First Communion is scheduled for Saturday, May 5th & Saturday, May 12th.  Please disregard the additional date of May 19th which is included in our school calendar.  Details regarding the First Communion schedule, as well as the opportunity to participate in one of the ten family Masses, will be communicated to parents during the month of October.

Running with the Saints 5K Race – November 5th.

Though still a month away, it is time now to register for our first annual Running with the Saints 5K Race on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 8:30 a.m.  Look for registration forms to come home with your children today. They MUST be returned by October 14th for a guaranteed T-shirt.  A separate registration form is required for each participant.  Additional forms may be downloaded from the link at the bottom of the Sentinel and are also available on the 5K website.  Paper registrations and payment may be returned to your child’s teacher.

We are excited to report that 14 of our very own teachers and faculty will be joining in the run!  Participants include Mr. Conroy and Mrs. Campagna as well as teachers from most grade levels.  In recognition of the feast day of All Saints in November, adults and children are encouraged to arrive dressed as their favorite saint.  (Costumes can be as simple as a picture pinned to your clothing or as elaborate as you wish.)  Runners and walkers of all ability levels are welcome.  Remember that many of our All Saints students run/walk more than a 5K each May during the Race for Education!  Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers as well as the top male and female finishers in nine different age categories.  We love the vision of children and adults running through the streets of Old Town Manassas representing our spiritual heroes!  Again, remember to get your registration forms in now and to please encourage others to join you!!
