Living Stones on the Pathway to Heaven…

Message from the Principal

With warmer temperatures and the start of spring, I cannot help but think that this is a time for new beginnings.  It is with this in mind that I wish to provide an update to you regarding the status of our uniform review process.

The Uniform Committee has selected the new uniform for 2011-2012 and it is with great anticipation that we look forward to sharing the “new look” with our school community.  So as to provide families with an opportunity to see the new uniform, All Saints Catholic School will host a student “fashion show” next Monday, March 28th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center.  Students from our program will model the new uniforms and I will provide an overview of the implementation process. Following the show, uniform samples will remain on display in the entrance of the school for those families who are unable to attend the special event.  Additionally, an overview of the uniform and the implementation process will be provided in next week’s newsletter.

This week I would like to share with you some of the enhanced business practices that Flynn & O’Hara will be introducing in an effort to provide even better customer service and greater convenience for our families.

1)       Beginning this summer, Flynn & O’Hara will offer two “priority days” for our school at their Fairfax store.  On two days, yet to be determined, Flynn & O’Hara will provide special staff support and guidance to families from our community.  While the store will remain open for customers from other schools, Flynn & O’Hara will make a special effort to prepare for and accommodate the needs of families from All Saints.  On these days, Flynn & O’Hara will offer free shipping to customer’s homes for items not in stock.  (Please note: These priority days will replace the on-site sale day that has previously occurred during the first week of August.)

2)       In light of the fact that All Saints has experienced an increase in enrollment the past several years, Flynn & O’Hara will increase their inventory to reflect the stability of the school, stocking as close as possible to 100% of the previous year’s sales.

3)       Flynn & O’Hara will ship orders to All Saints weekly at no charge to parents.  These uniform components will be received at the front office and remain available for parents to pick-up at their convenience.  (Please note: This service will not be available during the high volume time of the final week of August and first two weeks of September.)

4)       All uniform components, with the exception of the knee in the boys’ pants, will be covered by a full school year warranty.

This week I wish to publicly recognize and thank the members of the Uniform Committee for so generously sharing their time and expertise.  Over the course of many meetings they engaged in open dialogue and frank debate, selecting a uniform that will represent well our school community for years to come.

Thank you to the following members of the Uniform Committee for their service to our community:

Mrs. Janet Baldwin

Mrs. Gemma Brophy

Mrs. Zonia Garcia

Mr. John Hall

Mrs. Cathy Hammerstrom

Mrs. Tina McIntyre

Mrs. Bridget White

Mrs. Marsha Vice

Mrs. Peggy Engstrom

Mrs. Debbie Wisniewski

This week I also wish to announce a couple of changes regarding staffing for the 2011-2012 academic year.  As of this time, these are the only two transitions in the faculty anticipated for the upcoming year.

Mrs. Elena Cutting (Spanish teacher) has decided to resign from her position effective the close of the school year.  She will be returning to Spain this summer where she will continue her studies of the Spanish language before pursuing other professional opportunities.  We thank her for the energy and enthusiasm that she has brought to the classroom over the course of the past three years.

As you are already aware, Miss Joanna McCullough (middle school math teacher) is engaged to be married this summer.  Following her wedding, she will be relocating to Texas where her fiancé is currently employed.  Although she has been a part of our community for only two years, she has made a remarkable contribution to the success of our school through her roles in both the 4th grade and middle school programs. We wish her every success and blessing as she plans for both her upcoming wedding and the transition to Texas.

Mother Teresa Outreach Update

Thanks to the generosity of our students, a total of $578.34 has been collected during the past two school Masses.  All of the funds received through this program will be forwarded to our sister school in Haiti to defer the cost of lunches and school supplies.  Thank you, students, for living so beautifully the call to stewardship.

SCA St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Congratulations to the Student Council Association on raising $552.68 to benefit the B.A.R.N. and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  The funds were collected through the sale of raffle tickets and in support of the dress-down day event on St. Patrick’s Day.

3rd Quarter Lock-Down Drill ~ Tomorrow (2:00 p.m.)

The 3rd Quarter Lock-Down Drill will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th.  (Please note: This drill has been scheduled for several weeks and is not in response to any concerns specific to All Saints.  Rather, it is another exercise by which we maintain a state of preparedness should the need ever arise to secure the facility and safeguard the children.)

Terra Nova Testing Countdown ~ 3 Weeks!

As the week of standardized testing approaches, parents are asked to avoid scheduling appointments from Monday, April 11th – Tuesday, April 19th so that each student may participate in the testing as scheduled.

Field Day Announced ~ June 2nd

Field Day for Grades K-8 will take place on the grounds of Linton Hall School in Bristow on Thursday, June 2nd.  Mark your calendars now for what promises to be a great day of activities and fellowship for our school families.

VIRTUS Update Training Sessions

One of the diocesan requirements regarding the safe environment initiative is that of annual VIRTUS training.  Through attendance at the 30 minute video training, faculty, staff and volunteers alike are reminded of important practical measures that we can implement to maintain a safe environment. Those who have not yet attended the VIRTUS update training this year are asked to do so during the spring semester.  While there is no need to register on-line for this session, for planning purposes please contact Mrs. Janet Smith, VIRTUS coordinator, to confirm your plans to attend.

The VIRTUS update training will occur on the following date: Saturday, March 26th (Meeting Room 1 @ 10:30 a.m.)

New Student Referral Program

Many of our current families learned about the value of an All Saints education through a personal reference from an existing school family.  Again this year we would like to reward you for promoting the school to your family and friends!  Through the New Student Referral Program, your family can receive a $200.00 tuition credit for referring a new family to All Saints Catholic School.  For more information about this program, please see the attached flyer.  Help to spread the word about the success and tradition of All Saints Catholic School!

Calendar Change ~ ½ Day in May Rescheduled

The half day of school published in our calendar for Monday, May 9th has been moved to Friday, May 6th.  In light of the fact that a large number of students in grades 4-8 will be attending the Band Trip on May 6th, from an instructional standpoint it makes good sense to move the half day to this date.  The EPSF Screening is still scheduled for Monday, May 9th.  As such, there will be no Pre-K or Kindergarten classes on that day as previously announced.

Thank You Message from the Dalusung Family

Dear Friends in Christ:

On behalf of my whole family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for the way our All Saints School community has come together to lift us up in these difficult months since the loss of my Dad. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity – your thoughts, prayers, and cards, your attendance at the funeral, your thoughtfulness in preparing vegetarian AND non-vegetarian meals for my Mom and the children those first few weeks, and above all, your presence in our lives mean so much. We are humbled by your loving kindness. From the bottom of our hearts to yours, thank you.

Love and God’s blessings to you always,

Nichole (“Miss D”), Robin, Jessica, Joseph, and  Mia Dalusung

“And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.” Col 3:14
