Message from the Principal

This week I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Heather Deeney will serve as the long-term substitute teacher for Mrs. Otaizo while she is away on maternity leave, approximately the middle of February through the middle of May.  Mrs. Deeney is a graduate of Penn State University as well as the University of Phoenix where she earned a Masters Degree in Education.  She began her educational career at St. Christopher School in the Diocese of Las Vegas where she taught both fourth grade and middle school. We welcome Mrs. Deeney to our community this week as she begins observing and learning the routines of the first grade classroom.

In order that first grade parents may have an opportunity to meet Mrs. Deeney, there will be an informal Open House event tomorrow evening from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the first grade classroom. I hope that many will be able to stop by and meet Mrs. Deeney as she begins her time at All Saints.

This week I would also like to share with you that I have hired three additional on-call substitute teachers, all of whom have significant experience in the field of education.

Mrs. Mary Kate Foley ~ Mrs. Foley joins our community after retiring from the Manassas City Public School system with more than 30 years experience in primary level education.  Mrs. Foley earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Radford & Virginia Tech and a Masters Degree in Education, with a focus on curriculum and instruction, from George Mason University.

Mrs. Kristie Kleha ~ After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in English Education from Ohio State University, Mrs. Kleha returned to Bishop O’Connell High School, her alma mater, where she taught English for seven years.  Since that time, she has also completed seven years of teaching at Woodbridge Senior High School and South Lakes in Fairfax County.

Mrs. Judith Nicholas ~ With a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and Psychology from Mary Mount Manhattan College, Mrs. Nicholas has spent the past nine years teaching in the primary grades in Catholic schools located in New Jersey.  Additionally, she has significant experience in faith formation and has participated in a number of catechetical ministries at her previous parishes.

We welcome all of our new substitute teachers!  With the experience and expertise they bring, they will help to ensure that the learning continues even when the teachers are unable to be present.

A note about report cards: Due to the inconsistency in the music schedule since late November, it has not been possible to authentically assess each student’s progress in this area of the curriculum.  For this reason, no music grades will be issued for the second quarter.  Grading will resume with the hiring of a permanent replacement which I anticipate will occur in the coming weeks.

Catholic Schools Week will begin with an Open House event on Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m. –11:30 a.m.  Although specifically designed for prospective families, this event provides a wonderful opportunity for current families to tour the school and visit the classrooms.  In prior years, the mix of both current and future families has provided a great way for others in our community to learn about our school.  Plan to join our school and parish community as we kick-off our celebration of Catholic Schools Week!

8th Grade Confirmation ~ May 7th

Confirmation of 8th Grade students enrolled at All Saints Catholic School will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 7th.

Open House for Prospective Teachers

Again this year All Saints Catholic School is pleased to host an information session for individuals interested in learning more about teaching opportunities in our diocesan school system.  On Thursday, February 3rd Sr. Patricia Helene, IHM of Marymount University will present an overview of the application process as well as what it means to work in the mission of Catholic education.  The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Music Room.  For additional information, please see the link attached to this week’s newsletter.

Open House for 2011-2012 School Year

All Saints Catholic School will host an Open House for prospective parents on Thursday, February 10thbeginning at 9:00 a.m.  All parishioners and members of the community interested in learning more about the parish school are cordially invited to attend.  Following a presentation and introduction at 9:00 a.m., tours of the facility will be provided. Leonard Family Seeking Morning Carpool

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard are seeking one or more families to assist in bringing their daughter to school in the morning.  As Mrs. Leonard continues to battle cancer, her husband will be returning to work in February and will no longer be able to drop off their daughter at All Saints.  The family resides in Manassas and would appreciate any assistance that our school families can provide in this regard.  The Leonards can be reached via their home telephone: 703.330.8689.

We are pleased to report that the most recent tests have indicated that Mrs. Leonard’s tumors have decreased in size.  Let us continue to pray for healing and strength for Mrs. Leonard as she continues with her treatment plan.

Tuition Assistance Applications

Applications for tuition assistance for the 2011-2012 academic year are now available in both English and Spanish at the front office.  Again this year the Diocese of Arlington has contracted with FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Company.  FACTS has established an on-line application process that can be initiated through the company website (www.factstuitionaid.com.)

The due dates for applications and supporting documentation are as follows:

High School                  January 24, 2011

Elementary School       March 14, 2011

NOTE: All families with children enrolled in both high school and elementary school will need to submit an application by the January high school deadline.

Please note that ALL applications and supporting documentation must be received by FACTS by the date listed above, not postmarked.  Applications are not considered complete until FACTS has received the supporting documentation.

Outreach ~ Providing Meals for the Dalusung Family

To show our support and to assist the Dalusung family after the sudden loss of Ms. Nichole Dalusung’s father (who was also the grandfather of Joseph Dalusung in K2), we are rallying volunteers to provide meals for the family.  If you are interested in helping by providing a meal please follow this link for the mealtrain http://www.mealtrain.com/?id=mmfgun4edeft. Virtus Update

There will be two opportunities for the required annual update to Virtus training:

Saturday, February 12th at 10:30 AM in the Art Room

Saturday, March 26th at 10:30 AM in Meeting Room One

Also, there will be the 4-hour live training “Protecting God’s Children” presentation on Saturday, February 26th beginning at 9:00 AM in FKH.
