Message from the Principal
Last Thursday evening one of our former students who is now attending James Madison University contacted Mrs. Lewis to inquire whether she might play her flute with the Schola during our weekly school Mass. She shared with Mrs. Lewis that it was her hope that she would be able to attend at least one of our liturgies and support the music program prior to returning to college for the spring semester. As principal, it gave me great joy to see Eileen seated next to the choir, sharing her musical gifts as she so often did while a student at All Saints. Her desire to return to All Saints and to continue to participate in the life of our community tells a compelling story, one which gives living witness to the value she attaches to her formative years in our school. Taking her seat with the choir, Eileen communicated a subtle yet powerful message ~ All Saints is my school community.
Indeed, much more than a school, All Saints is a faith community. It is a place where students, faculty and parents encounter Christ on a daily basis. Through prayer, through the Sacraments, and through interaction with one another, members of our community experience grace-filled moments which are truly life-giving and life-changing. It is these encounters that our students recall and treasure long after they have graduated, even after they have forgotten the particular details of the curriculum.
Beginning on Sunday, January 30th, we join with Catholic schools across our nation to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, an annual occasion during which we highlight our distinct mission and legacy. As in prior years, special activities have been planned for each day of the week. The following is a list of special events planned for the week.
Sunday, January 30th Open House following morning Masses (8:30-11:30 a.m.) All students in attendance are asked to wear their school uniform.
Monday, January 31st Vocation Day Celebration & Prayer Service
Free Ice Cream for Students at Lunch
Tuesday, February 1st Staff Appreciation Day ~ Coordinated by Teachers and Students
Wednesday, February 2nd Priest Appreciation Day ~ Students will offer special prayers and spiritual bouquets for our parish priests.
Thursday, February 3rd Community Service Day ~ Grade level outreach to the local community
Student Appreciation Day ~ Optional Dress Down Day ($1.00 in support of our seminary) & No Homework
Friday, February 4th School Mass
Teacher Appreciation Day ~ Faculty & Staff Luncheon, hosted by the PTO, following Noon Dismissal
Again this year we will host a Vocation Day during which a number of seminarians, clergy members as well as religious will share their vocation story with our students. It is our hope that through this experience the students will both be reminded and encouraged to consider the fact that God may be calling them to a special life of service as a priest or member of a religious community.
Catholic Schools Week will begin with an Open House event on Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m. –11:30 a.m. Although specifically designed for prospective families, this event provides a wonderful opportunity for current families to tour the school and visit the classrooms. In prior years, the mix of both current and future families has provided a great way for others in our community to learn about our school.
In regards to Eileen, I have every confidence that you will see her again through the years as she has an open invitation to join us with her flute at our school Masses whenever home from college. In fact, you may observe other visiting musicians from time to time. With trumpets and clarinets in hand, they maintain cherished ties with their elementary school and we are reminded of our far-reaching legacy.
Snow Day s ~ 3 Built into Calendar
Three snow days have been incorporated in our school calendar for the current year. As we have had two snow days to date, the final day of school is presently Wednesday, June 15th. In the event of an additional cancellation due to inclement weather, the last day will be Thursday, June 16th.
Part-Time Employment Opportunity ~ Extended Day Program
All Saints is now accepting applications for individuals interested in part-time employment in the Extended Day Program beginning in February. For more information and to request an application, please contact the main office.
March for Life
On Monday, January 24th the students of All Saints will join their prayers with the thousands who will gather in Washington, D.C. at the annual March for Life. As a school community we will pray for an end to abortion and for an increase in respect for the sanctity of life at all stages in our society. While children who wish to attend the March for Life with their parents will be marked as absent, please know that this absence will not affect a child who otherwise would earn “Perfect Attendance” at the close of the year. If your child will be attending the March, please notify his or her teacher via a note by the end of next week.
Donations of baby food- 1st foods jar food, 3rd foods jar food, baby cereal, and Similac Advanced formula will be collected in classrooms from Tuesday, January 18th –Monday, January 24th. Students will offer their donation during the prayer service on January 24th. Donations will benefit AAA Women for Choice in Manassas. All donations are greatly appreciated.
Arlington Band Festival ~ CALENDAR UPDATE
The Arlington Band Festival will occur on Saturday, April 2nd rather than April 16th as originally published in our school calendar.
Open House for Prospective Teachers
Again this year All Saints Catholic School is pleased to host an information session for individuals interested in learning more about teaching opportunities in our diocesan school system. On Thursday, February 3rd Sr. Patricia Helene, IHM of Marymount University will present an overview of the application process as well as what it means to work in the mission of Catholic education. The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Music Room. For additional information, please see the link attached to this week’s newsletter.
Open House for 2011-2012 School Year
All Saints Catholic School will host an Open House for prospective parents on Thursday, January 20th beginning at 9:00 a.m. All parishioners and members of the community interested in learning more about the parish school are cordially invited to attend. Tuition Assistance Applications
Applications for tuition assistance for the 2011-2012 academic year are now available in both English and Spanish at the front office. Again this year the Diocese of Arlington has contracted with FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Company. FACTS has established an on-line application process that can be initiated through the company website (www.factstuitionaid.com).
The due dates for applications and supporting documentation are as follows:
High School January 24, 2011
Elementary School March 14, 2011
NOTE: All families with children enrolled in both high school and elementary school will need to submit an application by the January high school deadline.
Please note that ALL applications and supporting documentation must be received by FACTS by the date listed above, not postmarked. Applications are not considered complete until FACTS has received the supporting documentation.

Volunteers Needed to Provide Meals for the Dalusung Family
Sadly, Mrs. Dalusung’s father passed away this week from a sudden and unexpected heart attack. He was also the grandfather of Joseph Dalusung in K2. To show our support and to assist the Dalusung family in this difficult time we are rallying volunteers to provide meals for the family. If you are interested in helping by providing a meal, please contact Cathy Pell at email@example.com. Thank you for your help, as well as your thoughts and prayers for the Dalusung family.
There will be two opportunities for the required annual update to Virtus training:
Saturday, February 12th at 10:30 AM in the Art Room
Saturday, March 26th at 10:30 AM in Meeting Room One
Also, there will be the 4-hour live training “Protecting God’s Children” presentation on Saturday, February 26th beginning at 9:00 AM in FKH.

Don’t Forget – Bowl America this Friday, January 21st from 12-7 p.m. Remember school is out so let’s celebrate the shortest week in school with a party! The cost is only $3 per game including shoes. Need food? They have a snack bar with food perfect for snacking while you bowl. Don’t forget your flyer or mention All Saints School at the register and 10% of the sales and concessions will be donated to our school. Come on out, have fun, and support the best school around!
