Message from the Principal

Last week I met with the members of the Uniform Focus Group for an informal discussion.  After a thirty minute sharing session during which members provided first-hand accounts of their experiences and observations, the group arrived at the following consensus: There is sufficient enough reason at this time to initiate a school-wide survey to parents to assess the current level of satisfaction with the uniform program.

This week I would like to invite you to complete a brief electronic survey that can be found at the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QM87K9F.  Parents are asked to respond by Tuesday, November 23rd.

The survey is purposely very brief, designed to provide the committee with a summary of parent opinion on the core issues related to our school uniform.  The feedback received from the community at large will help to determine the course of action for the committee and decisions regarding the future of our school uniform.  Your participation is very important as the results of the survey will determine the scope of the review process.

As previously stated, it is important that I stress that this is not an announcement of a uniform change, rather the beginning of a process to closely examine the key issues relative to the uniform.  In advance, thank you for your participation and input.

I hope that many of will be able to join us for the Thanksgiving Luncheon on Monday.  Remember, order forms for the event are due tomorrow, November 18th.

Again this year I will be unable to attend the luncheon due to a meeting of the Virginia Catholic Education Association Committee.  If last year’s experience is any indicator, I should be back by early afternoon.  Save me a place in the serving line…and a plate of turkey!

Thanksgiving Luncheon ~ Schedule & Directions for Parents

In an effort to better accommodate all of the families who attend and to reduce “wait time”, we will be hosting four lunch seatings this year.  We are confident that this new schedule will provide more time and space for families to enjoy this special occasion.  The new schedule is as follows:

11:00-11:40             Grades 6-8

11:40-12:20             Grades 4-5

12:20-1:00               Grades 2-3

1:00-1:40                 Grades K-1

Parents are asked to arrive and sign in by the front office 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the lunch time for their child’s grade level.  There will be two sign-in tables at the front entrance of the school.

After signing in, parents are asked to report directly to their child’s classroom.  The homeroom teacher will provide guidance as to when families should begin to report to the cafeteria for the luncheon.

The kitchen staff is seeking additional volunteers to assist with the serving of food during the luncheon. For more information or to volunteer your time, please contact Mrs. Wendy Matner.  (368-4400).

Reminder:  Payment for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is due tomorrow, Thursday, November 18th.

NJHS Operation Turkey

The NJHS will sponsor a food drive to benefit SERVE next Wednesday.  Students are invited to bring canned food and dry good donations beginning on Monday, November 22nd.  The items will be placed in collection boxes in the classrooms where they will remain until the prayer service on Wednesday.

Rainy Day Dismissal ~ Reminder of Procedures

On days of inclement weather, students will be dismissed by grade level and report directly to their assigned carpool bay.  All parents are asked to stand directly in front of the row in which their car is parked so that the children may easily identify them.  Please refrain from crossing the parking lot to pick up your children as this makes it more difficult for the students to actually see their parents.  Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to maintain a system that is both efficient and safe for students, parents and staff.

Treats for Troops Raises $411!

Thanks to the generous participation of the students, last week’s dress down day in celebration of Veterans’ Day raised $411.00 for the Treats for the Troops Program.  Items purchased with these funds will be forwarded to Colonel Cummings, husband of our second grade teacher, who is presently deployed in the Middle East and has graciously offered to assist us in extending support to those serving in harm’s way.

Quantico Wreath Laying ~ Community Project for Middle School Students

Mrs. Denise LaRose, one of our middle school parents, has identified a wonderful opportunity by which young people can participate in a wreath laying project at Quantico Cemetery on Saturday, December 4th.  This week students in the middle school will receive information about a gathering being organized by families outside of school.  I wish to thank Mrs. LaRose for organizing the event as it provides our students an opportunity to participate in a very distinct and honorable service project.

It is important that parents understand that the wreath laying project will take place outside of school and is not a school sponsored event.  Subsequently, parents assume full responsibility for transportation and supervision should they wish that their child participate.

Parent Notepads ~ Courtesy of Local Businesses

This week each family will receive a pre-printed notepad that can be used for the purpose of sending messages to the front office or classrooms.  The notepads have been printed and distributed to all school families through the financial support of local businesses who have sponsored advertisements. When seeking goods and/or services, please consider these supporters of All Saints Catholic School!

Enrollment Survey for Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten Programs 2011-2012 ~ REMINDER

With the demand for Catholic education in our region and the reputation for excellence that our school enjoys, it is important that the office solicit information from current families regarding plans for enrollment in our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for the upcoming year.  As in the past, we will continue to give first consideration to current school families before reviewing new applications in the spring.

While completion of the enclosed survey does not guarantee enrollment, it is helpful for us to know how many current families plan to apply for these two programs.  Even if you have a child currently enrolled in the Pre-Kindergarten program, it is important that you notify us of your interest for next year’s Kindergarten.  Please submit all survey responses to the school office by Friday, November 19th.

Annual  VIRTUS  Training Update

An annual 30-minute review of the warning signs of abuse and the steps we can take to keep our children safe is required for all clergy, employees and any volunteers who have contact with children.

This valuable reminder will be presented on:       Tuesday, November 30th in Classroom 14 at 7:00 PM.

Special Message from Spirit Activity Coordinator

“I wanted to express my sincerest appreciation to all those who attended our Spirit Night at Chuck E. Cheese on Thursday, November 11th.  I know that my family and the many others that I saw seemed to have a wonderful time.  When I spoke with Chuck E. Cheese they said it was one of their best fundraisers and that we earned over $600 for All Saints Catholic School!  We know that our school will really put that money to good use. Thanks again to all those who helped to organize the event.”

Donations for the Casino Night & Auction Needed

We will be collecting donations for the Casino Night & Auction during the thanksgiving luncheon.  If you bring an item of $10 or more in value, you will be entered in the drawing for 2 redskins tickets for their December 12th game against the Buccaneers.  More information available on the attached flyer. Evening with St. Nicholas

Mark your calendars for December 3rd!  All Saints PTO proudly invites families to the 2nd Annual “Evening with St. Nicholas”, beginning at 7pm in the church.

We will begin the evening with an Advent Prayer Service and traditional Advent carols in the church.  St. Nicholas, whose feast day is December 6, will again share the story of his life.   Families will have the opportunity to meet St. Nicholas and enjoy cookies and cocoa in the gym afterwards.  Bring your own camera for a photo with St. Nicholas, who will be joined this year by Mother Seton.

Once again, it’s a community-building event, designed to help us prepare for the Advent season. Families will not be charged admission; rather, we ask that you bring a donation of new shoes in honor of St. Nicholas and his feast day.   Monetary donations will also be accepted.  Proceeds will go to House of Mercy.   House of Mercy shoe donation guidelines are :  NEW plain colors of tennis shoes- white, blue, black, tan, or brown.  No character tennis shoes, please.  Can’t make it to he event?   You can still make a donation by leaving it at the front desk, attention :  Gina Michak.

***Many hands are needed to help the day of the event for set-up, decorating, and clean up.    Food donations are needed for the evening’s refreshments. We are asking for Christmas cookies/decorated sugar cookies, (homemade or store bought), cocoa mix and mini-marshmallows.  Cookies only, please.  While the All Saints School community is always very generous when asked to donate baked goods, the simplicity of a cookie is all we need for this event.  Thank you for your understanding and generosity!
