Living Stones on the Pathway to Heaven…
Message from the Principal
One of our cherished traditions at All Saints is the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, a special meal prepared by the kitchen staff for students, parents, faculty & staff. Linked to this week’s newsletter is a letter and order form inviting all of our families to participate in this wonderful celebration of food & fellowship on Monday, November 22nd.
In an effort to better accommodate all the families who attend and to reduce “wait time”, we will be hosting four lunch seatings this year. We are confident that this new schedule will provide more time and space for families to enjoy this special occasion. The new schedule is as follows:
11:00-11:40 Grades 6-8
11:40-12:20 Grades 4-5
12:20-1:00 Grades 2-3
1:00-1:40 Grades K-1
The arrival process will be the same as last year with parents reporting directly to their son/daughter’s classroom. There, they will wait with their children, and when called by grade level, report to the gym via the Father Kelley Wing.
So that the kitchen staff may begin planning for the event, please be sure to return your form no later than November 18th. We do hope that you will join us for this Thanksgiving tradition and what may prove to be our largest luncheon ever! If you have any questions, please call the cafeteria at 703-368-4400, ext. 211. For your convenience the cafeteria staff will be sending home a paper copy of the letter and order form with each student this week.
As you aware, Mrs. Hammang’s mother passed away last week after a period of illness. Mrs. Hammang and her husband travelled to Michigan where her mother was buried on Saturday. Upon their return to Virginia, Mr. Hammang fell ill and was taken to Prince William Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit due to cardiac concerns. At this time, he is stable and appears to be responding to medication. I would ask that you keep Mrs. Hammang and her husband in your prayers in the days ahead. While exhausted from all that they have experienced within the past week, they are sustained by our prayers and messages of support.
Due to Mrs. Hammang’s absence, report cards for the middle school students will not be ready for distribution on Friday. For this reason, only reports for students in grades 1-5 will be sent home at the end of this week. At this time, I anticipate that the middle school reports will be completed and ready for distribution early next week. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this regard. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Virtue of the Month ~ Gratitude
During the month of November, students will be encouraged to implement the following strategies:
¨ Thank Jesus each day for the sacrifice He made for you. Look at the crucifix and say, “Thank you, Jesus”.
¨ Thank God for your special talents and use them to serve Him every day.
¨ Remember to say “Please” and “Thank you”.
¨ Show gratitude to all of your teachers.
¨ Remember to thank the ladies in the cafeteria for your lunch, milk, or for helping you open your juice box or milk container.
¨ Tell your mom and dad you love them.
¨ Make a special effort to show gratitude to someone in your family each day.
¨ Say “Please” and “Thank you” at home.
¨ Thank a friend for being there for you.
¨ Be a good sport when you play.
¨ Thank God for your life, family, food and home each night.
Prayer of the Month
We want to thank You for them many gifts You have given us, especially the gift of Yourself.
Accept our acts of courtesy and care as gifts of love to You.
Help us to imitate Your Mother Mary and to give glory to God through our words and actions.
We ask this in Your Holy Name.
All Saints Parish Mission
Please click on the link at the end of the newsletter for information about the All Saints Parish Mission. The Mission will be held November 14th – 18th. The Retreat Director will be Fr. Simeon Gallagher, OFMCap. The theme is A Theology and Spirituality for Relationships. The attached flyer lists the time and the topics for each evening.
Report Cards & Parent-Teacher Conferences
In preparation for the parent-teacher conferences next week, please take some time to review all of the information provided by the teacher, noting any special areas of success or difficulty. Additionally, I encourage you to speak with your child to determine if there is anything that he or she would like you to address with the teacher. Please feel free to make a list of any questions or concerns that you wish to discuss during the conference. While the time for conferences is somewhat limited, the teachers are committed to addressing the development of your child and welcome any questions you might have. Recognizing that experiences in the home also affect a child’s performance at school, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss any changes in routine, significant events, such as the death of a close relative or pet, or any other occurrences that might be affecting your child’s behavior. The better the teacher understands the specific needs of each of the children, the better he or she will be able to assist them in their learning.
The following is a list of ideas that may prove helpful as you plan for a successful and productive meeting.
Before the Conference
¨ Arrive on time
¨ Bring a written list of questions or points for discussion
¨ Realize that your child may exhibit different behaviors at school than at home
During the Conference
¨ Ask for examples of your child’s work
¨ Discuss specific strengths & weaknesses of your child as a learner
¨ Ask the teacher for specific ways in which you can help at home
¨ Help set two or three specific goals for your child for the next grading period
After the Conference
¨ Share with your child what the teacher reports
¨ Remember that, as a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life. Give your child a hug and reassurance following the conference.
Major studies have shown that the most significant factor in a child’s success is parent involvement and support. Please know how gratified the faculty and staff is for your continued interest in working with our school to provide the best educational experience possible for your children. The teachers look forward to sharing their observations of the first quarter and to charting a course for continued growth and progress for your child.
2010 Christmas Parade Float
CALLING ALL ARTISTS! Come out and be a part of the 65th annual Manassas Christmas Parade. This years theme is “Our Christmas Wish” and we’re “calling” any student who would like to paint a picture of their Christmas wish on a mural which will be displayed on the All Saints School Christmas float. Children who would like to participate will paint a 2’x2′ (approximately) square. We ask that you work with your child to develop a sketch of their Christmas wish. Please have your child bring that sketch on the day they will be painting.
We will have two paint sessions on Monday and Tuesday, November 15th and 16th after school in the art room. Students will need to bring a change of clothes (old please!) and must be picked up in the art room by 5:45PM. The permission slip linked to the newsletter must be received no later than Wed, November 10th. Please indicate on the permission slip the date your child will participate. Also make sure you include your cell phone number and an email address. Space will be limited so children will be scheduled on a first come basis. If you have any questions please call Sue Stevens at (703)470-1344.
This Week! ~ Please come and help tidy up the church and school landscaping on Campus Beautification Day this Saturday, November 6th from 8:30 am to 12 pm. The campus landscaping is maintained by volunteers and since there is so much to do we need your help! No experience necessary. Experienced gardeners will be there to guide you. Everyone is welcome. Earn service hours and Points for Parents (3 points per hour worked.) An adult must chaperone children volunteers. Please contact Holly Crocker at 703 330-8329 or email@example.com if you plan to attend and bring your own gardening gloves and tools. We’re planning to weed, prune, mulch, bury irrigation hoses, and collect leaves. The more volunteers the better. “Many hands make light work!”
Coming Up! ~ Have fun with the whole family at Chuck-e Cheeses on Thursday, November 11th from 3 to 9 pm. Teachers and staff eat free with a school ID. Each student will receive a sticker from the school redeemable for 10 free tokens. Also, bring your child’s most recent report card and his or her good grades will earn each child up to 15 additional free tokens with any food purchase. Younger siblings can earn free tokens too with online rewards calendars. These and additional everyday coupons are available at http://www.chuckecheese.com. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to All Saints School. Chuck-e Cheese is located at 7730 Streamwalk Lane, Manassas, near Home Depot off of Balls Ford Road.
All school parents are invited to participate in an anonymous, online survey for the purpose of assessing the level of bullying at All Saints Catholic School. Each survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. The Parent Survey on Bullying Fall 2010 is for parents of students in all grade levels. TheK-2nd Grade Survey on Bullying is for students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade to complete with the assistance of their parents. Students in grades 3-8 will complete a corresponding survey during their computer class beginning this week.
To expedite the survey process, this year parents are asked to complete by Friday, November 5th an electronic survey that can be found at the following links. In advance, we thank you for your participation in our efforts to both assess our current climate and to establish benchmarks for future reference.

All Saints Middle School…Explore the Possibilities
Tomorrow night (Thursday, November 4th) All Saints Catholic School will host All Saints Middle School … Explore the Possibilities, a night for parents to learn more about our middle school program. Parents are invited to meet our middle school team and discover the highlights of our curriculum as they tour each classroom. The meeting will begin in the Art Room on the second floor at 7:00 p.m.
Although you and your children are already an important part of our school community, we recognize that you may not be completely familiar with all our middle school has to offer. All Saints’ small, faith-focused learning environment will provide your child with:
- An interactive religious education
- Leadership opportunities
- Academic excellence through a challenging curriculum to help your child excel in high school and beyond
- Technology supported instruction
- Nurturing and welcoming community
- Numerous extracurricular activities
- Opportunities to help others through school-based service projects
This middle school information night will also be open to parents outside of the current school community. To allow us to properly prepare for this event, please RSVP by completing the form below or by emailing Janis DeVore at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Veterans Day Celebration

We cordially invite all active duty, reserve, former and retired military personnel to attend our school Mass on Wednesday, November 10th at 8:30 a.m. Following the Mass, there will be a ceremony and question/answer session in the Parish Activities Center, followed by a reception for our honored guests in Father Kelley Hall. Students received a packet of information through their classroom teachers last week about our Veterans Wall Display which will further honor military personnel from our school community.
¨¨ Veterans Day Celebration ~ Dress Down Day on Tuesday, November 9th. Donations collected will be used to purchase treats for our troops in Iraq. See flyer link below for information.

Annual VIRTUS Training Update
An annual 30-minute review of the warning signs of abuse and the steps we can take to keep our children safe is required for all clergy, employees and any volunteers who have contact with children.
This valuable reminder will be presented on: Tuesday, November 9th in Meeting Room 2 at 2:15 PM.
If you have any questions, please call Janet Smith in the parish office at (703) 393-2158.
October BoxTops for Education Update
Our October collection yielded 998 boxtops from 39 students out of 553 students participating. A total of 6750 boxtops, collected since April 1, brings us $675 closer to the $5000 goal. Our October class collection winners are 2A and 8B.
Boxtops are being collected continuously. Mark your envelopes / baggies with the homeroom. Go towww.btfe.com for a complete listing of products that have boxtops on them. There are several sweepstakes that can be entered designating All Saints School as the recipient to win additional boxtops. You can also register to receive coupons and recipes.
If you shop on-line, check out the site. The school can earn a percent through their ‘Market Place’. A parent let me know that it was no different than shopping on a merchant’s website other than the school earning a percent.
We only have through March to reach our $5000 goal. Ask everyone you know to clip boxtops and send them in often. If every student strives to collect and send in 20 boxtops each month, that’s $1100 earned each month. So get creative in your collection and help your class to be the top collector. More details to come on class collection recognition.
