Message from the Principal
Too much of a good thing ~ even snow ~ can make one long for the regular routine of day-to-day life. It was wonderful to open up the doors of school this morning and to see the children once again! I suspect that even the students were looking forward to an opportunity to both visit with their friends and to return to the business of learning.
The business of learning, more than ever, will be our focus in the weeks ahead. With only two months until the week of Terra Nova testing, the teachers are now implementing strategies to further maximize learning for our students. Prioritizing curriculum objectives and providing additional opportunities for reinforcement of learning, the faculty is committed to enriching the classroom experiences of our students as we strive to make up for lost time.
As announced just prior to the storm, All Saints will be in session on Thursday, April 8th and Friday, April 9th to make up our first two snow days. I fully anticipate that All Saints will receive one “Blue Ribbon Day” providing us an opportunity to take a pass on making up the third day as required by diocesan policy. Since our school day runs long, we surpass the minimum of 990 instructional hours and still have 1.5 days of extra time built into our schedule at this point. For this reason, it is not necessary for us to schedule additional make-up days beyond those already announced for the week of Easter.
Important Reminder: All Saints will continue operating on a normal schedule through the close of this week unless otherwise announced via the School Messenger System. We will, however, follow the decision of Prince William County Schools in response to future weather events.

Plans are already well underway for the upcoming year at All Saints. One change that I wish to announce this week is that of a new P.E. uniform for students beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year. This change has been initiated for two reasons. First, the existing royal blue sweatshirts/pants are not consistent with our school colors: navy blue and white.
Secondly, in recent years there have been a number of challenges related to the shorts, i.e. variance in sizes and pockets that sometimes hang lower than the bottom of the shorts. The nylon shorts, already worn by students in the middle school, will resolve these issues and will also be more comfortable for our students. Although priced at $2-3 more than the previous shorts, they will wear better as they do not fade or shrink.
The following is a summary of the updated P.E. uniform for students in grades K-8.

The new P.E. uniform components are available for purchase at Flynn & O’Hara for parents who wish to purchase these articles during the spring months. Although the new uniform will not officially be introduced until next fall, students are welcome to wear the updated uniform during the spring months beginning Monday, April 12th.
Note: The existing royal blue P.E. uniforms will be grandfathered through the 2010-2011 school year. Students may continue to wear the royal blue uniforms during this time of transition. Additionally, Flynn & O’Hara will continue to sell the royal blue uniform at a significant discount.
One of the many blessings of a Catholic school is the opportunity for faith formation available to students, staff and parents during the liturgical seasons of the year. The prayer services and school wide practices become meaningful traditions that serve as milestones and lead the students to greater reflection with each passing year.
Today we begin our Lenten journey as a parish school community. As such, the students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight gathered in the gym at 9:40 a.m. for the Farewell to the Alleluia Banner prayer service, immediately followed by Ash Wednesday Mass. Although the Pre-kindergarten students did not attend the liturgy, they were led in prayer in their classrooms and also received ashes.
As Lent serves as an invitation to penance and growth in holiness, students in grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the school day. In addition to our weekly Mass, students will attend the Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons. Each week, several grade levels will gather to pray and reflect on Christ’s great love for us, evident in his sacrifice on the cross.
Our objective is to provide the students with a clear sense that this is a unique time of year. Our hope is that the gentle repetition of these prayers, rituals and traditions will become part of the fabric of the children’s lives, something which they anticipate well beyond their years at All Saints.

Science Fair ~ Scheduled to occur on Thursday, February 18th, this event has been postponed. A revised timeline will be announced by Mrs. Hammang this week.
Catholic Schools Week Faculty/Staff Luncheon ~ Postponed until Thursday, February 25th. The luncheon will take place during the regularly scheduled lunch times as this is a full day of school.
PTO Family Pizza and Bingo Night ~ Rescheduled for Saturday, February 27th from 5:00-9:00 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall. Previously registered families who are unable to attend are encouraged to contact Mrs. Linda Gaynord who will be happy to provide a refund.

Re-Registration Forms ~ Reminder
Parents are asked to complete all of the forms and return them to the office no later than Friday, February 19th. Since registration of new students begins today, it is important that parents return the forms by the deadline in order to insure that a place is reserved for each child who will be returning for the upcoming year.
Tuition Assistance Applications
Applications for tuition assistance for the 2010-2011 academic year are available in both English and Spanish at the front office. Again this year the Diocese of Arlington has contracted with FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Company. FACTS has established an on-line application process that can be initiated through the company website (www.factstuitionaid.com.) The deadline for first consideration, for which the majority of diocesan funds are allocated, is Monday, March 15th. Please note: The application must be received by FACTS, not postmarked, by this date. For more information about this program, please see the attached flyer.
Many of our current families learned about the value of an All Saints education through a personal reference from an existing school family. Again this year we would like to reward you for promoting the school to your family and friends!

Open House for 2010-2011 School Year
All Saints Catholic School will host an Open House for prospective parents on Friday, February 19th. All parishioners and members of the community interested in learning more about the parish school are cordially invited to attend. February Open House Nursery Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help with the open house nursery on February 19th, 8:45 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Volunteers must be Virtus approved. Spirit News ~ Coming Up!
Have fun with the whole family at Chuck-e Cheeses next Thursday, February 25th from 3 to 9 pm. Teachers and staff eat free with a school ID. Each student will receive a sticker from the school redeemable for 10 free tokens. Also, bring your child’s most recent report card and his or her good grades will earn each child up to 15 additional free tokens with any food purchase. Younger siblings can earn free tokens too with online rewards calendars. These and additional everyday coupons are available at http://www.chuckecheese.com. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to All Saints School. Chuck-e Cheese is located at 7730 Streamwalk Lane, Manassas, near Home Depot off of Balls Ford Road.

The deadline for participation in the BoxTops contest is Friday, February 19th. Families are reminded to support our school throughout the year by saving these items for redemption as part of this school funding program.
Paul VI PTO Parent-Student Roundtable Forum: Bullying, Cyber-bullying, & “Sexting”
The Paul VI Catholic High School PTO will hold a Parent-Student Roundtable Forum on Bullying, Cyber-bullying, and “Sexting” next Tuesday evening, February 23, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Several officials and speakers will be in attendance to provide valuable insight into these important and timely issues, as well as deterrent and preventive measures. All PVI parents and students are urged to attend, and we also welcome those from other schools throughout our diocese.
