Message from the Principal
Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed a beautiful celebration of Christmas, made all the more memorable by the historic snowstorm.
In accordance with diocesan policy regarding inclement weather, our school is required to make-up the first five â€œsnow daysâ€ that occur during the year. As announced last spring, these days will be rescheduled during the week of Easter. (In recent years the make-up days have been added to the end of the year. In consideration of the fact that the final day of school without any inclement weather is Wednesday, June 16th, an alternate option was identified by a faculty committee last year when it was realized that adding days to the end of the year may have resulted in our final day occurring on Wednesday, June 23rd.) Subsequently, Thursday, April 8th and Friday, April 9th will serve as our first two make-up days. In the event of additional inclement weather, Wednesday April 7th would serve as our third day and Tuesday, April 6th would serve as the fourth. Monday, April 5th will be reserved for the Easter holiday with the fifth day, if necessary, added to the end of the year.
Virtue of the Month Program ~ Compassion (Caring)
For some children, KINDNESS might be a good way to explain this virtue.
Pray for those people who are hungry or homeless.
Give money to the poor box in church from your own allowance.
Give food or clothing to those in need.
Help at home without being asked.
Keep your room neat and orderly to help your parents.
Make a pretty card or write a cheerful letter to someone who is sick or in a nursing home.
Listen quietly when your friend is upset or angry and needs to talk.
Visit relatives, neighbors, or friends that are sick.
Include new students in your games. Introduce them to your friends.
If someone doesnâ€™t understand a lesson or a game, offer to teach them. Do not make fun of them.
Make someone laugh when they are feeling sad.
Be kind to everyone you meet.

Prayer for Compassion
O Father, give us the compassion you want us to have and teach us to embrace each other with compassionate arms, no matter what our age, color, history, or belief. Help us to remember that you are Life Itself, and that you are using every one of our unique gifts to bring us together with you once again. Amen.
Open House for 2010-2011 School Year
All Saints Catholic School will host an Open House for prospective parents on Thursday, January 21st beginning at 9:00 a.m. All parishioners and members of the community interested in learning more about the parish school are cordially invited to attend. Following a presentation and introduction at 9:00 a.m., tours of the facility will be provided. The diocese requires volunteers who have completed the four hour VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive. This 30 minute video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school. The next training session will take place on Thursday, January 21st beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Meeting Room 1. (Please note: Those volunteers who attended the VIRTUS update session during the fall semester need not attend. This session is specifically for those who viewed the 30 minute training last winter or who have not yet participated in the follow up training. This week we will distribute stewardship envelopes for the new calendar year. We invite you to take some time to discuss with your children the importance of sharing their time, talent and treasure with those in need each week. While we traditionally think of these envelopes as the means by which financial contributions are made to the church, please note that this is only one aspect of the program. On the back of each envelope is a place for each child to indicate what they have done for God each week. It is our hope that all of the students in the school will see this as an opportunity, regardless of age or grade, to help build the Kingdom of God through charitable deeds and generosity on a weekly basis.

Tuition Assistance Applications
Applications for tuition assistance for the 2010-2011 academic year are available in both English and Spanish at the front office. Again this year the Diocese of Arlington has contracted with FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Company. FACTS has established an on-line application process that can be initiated through the company website (www.factstuitionaid.com.) The deadline for first consideration, for which the majority of diocesan funds are allocated, is Monday, March 15th. Please note: The application must be received by FACTS, not postmarked, by this date. For more information about this program, please see the attached flyer.
The dessert on the lunch menu for next Tuesday, Jan. 12th will be changed to include a funnel cake instead of a brownie as originally scheduled. Those students who do not wish to order the school lunch will be given the opportunity to purchase a funnel cake for $0.75. All of the proceeds will be donated to the 8th grade graduation fund. Due to this change, there will be no soft pretzel or ice cream sales this day.
Running Club ~ Running Club will begin on Wednesday, January 20th.

Perhaps your certification has expired, or perhaps you are thinking of changing careers or returning to teaching after a period of absence. Do you have questions about qualifications to teach? Would you like to learn more about the mission of teaching in a Catholic School in a nurturing and caring, Christ-centered environment? Please come to one of the following Open Houses for Prospective Teachers scheduled throughout the Diocese and meet with Sister Patricia Helene, IHM, former Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese and current head of the Marymount University Catholic School Leadership Program, and Elizabeth A. Roach, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel from the Diocesan Office of Catholic Schools, to learn more about the opportunities and advantages of teaching in our Catholic Schools. No registration is required.

Open House Nursery Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help with the open house nursery on January 21st and February 11th, 8:45 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Volunteers must be Virtus approved. Personal Finance Seminar
The Adult Education Ministry will present its winter personal finance seminars during February and March, 2010. The 6-session seminars are free and are designed to assist married/engaged couples and single adults in managing their personal finances.
The seminars are based on the Veritas Financial Ministries popular 7 Steps to Financial Freedom series and incorporate Catholic principles of Personal finance throughout the curriculum.
Two introductory sessions to explain the course offerings and the schedule of classes will be offered: Tues. January 19 at 7pm in Room 2 and Thurs. January 21 at 7pm in Room 2.
All married/engaged couples and single adults are invited. Start your new year off by getting your financial affairs in order!
