Message from the Principal

Last week’s celebration of our Blue Ribbon status was truly heart-warming and memorable. I wish to thank the many families who attended the ceremony on Thursday evening, filling the church to near capacity. The sense of school pride was palpable as Dr. Maureen Dowling, Acting Director of the Department of Education’s Office of Non-public Education, presented a certificate to our school. It was a moment that I know many of us will cherish for years to come.

Such a beautiful celebration would never have been possible without the hard work and dedication of many behind the scenes. I wish to specifically thank our Development Coordinator, Mrs. Janis DeVore, for having served as event chairperson. She managed the many details with finesse and orchestrated a first-class celebration for our community. I also wish to thank the many members of our faculty and staff who shared their special gifts and talents in support of the event. From the elegant student presentation to the design of the program, they generously gave of their time and energy in support of the program. I also wish to thank the many parents who volunteered their efforts in preparing the campus for the event. In the words of Mr. L’Abbe, a member of the maintenance team, our school and campus have never looked better! This is thanks to the many parents who assisted with the beautification project, culminating with the stringing of blue lights on one of the courtyard trees. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, the gym was also transformed over a two day period into a beautiful reception space.

It was indeed an evening during which the faith, generosity, hospitality, professionalism and dedication of our community shone brightly. And it is these same attributes that led to our distinction as a Blue Ribbon School! Thank you for being an integral part of our story!

Support for the Merrill Family & St. Bernadette School Community
Two weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Merrill, parents at St. Bernadette School in Springfield, were tragically killed in an automobile accident. Since that time, several All Saints’ parents have inquired as to how they might be able to provide support to the family. Last week I contacted Mrs. Beeks, Principal of St. Bernadette, to assure her of our support and interest in assisting the Merrill Family. She graciously provided the following information for our community.
Many have asked about making contributions to support Emma, Molly, Margaret and Cate Merrill. Anyone who would like to make a donation to the trust fund for the girls should make a check payable to “Merrill Children Trust ID #276283212,” mailed to the following address:

Enrollment Survey for Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten Programs 2010-2011
With the demand for Catholic education and the reputation for excellence that our school enjoys, it is important that the office solicit information from current families regarding plans for enrollment in our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for the upcoming year. As in the past, we will continue to give first consideration to current school families before reviewing new applications in the spring.

While completion of the enclosed survey does not guarantee enrollment, it is helpful for us to know how many current families plan to apply for these two programs. Even if you have a child currently enrolled in the Pre-Kindergarten program, it is important that you notify us of your interest for next year’s Kindergarten. Please submit all survey responses to the school office by Friday, November 20th.

School Directories
A copy of the 2009-2010 Directory is being distributed to each family today. As in the past, the directory has been printed through the generous support of sponsors listed in the publication. Please consider these local businesses when shopping for goods and services in the greater Manassas region. Thank you, Mrs. Bruno, for formatting and designing the 09-10 edition of our directory!

Suggestions for Parent-Teacher Conferences

The following is a list of ideas that may prove helpful as you plan for a successful and productive meeting.

Before the Conference

¨ Arrive on time
¨ Bring a written list of questions or points for discussion
¨ Realize that your child may exhibit different behaviors at school than at home

During the Conference

¨ Ask for examples of your child’s work
¨ Discuss specific strengths & weaknesses of your child as a learner
¨ Ask the teacher for specific ways in which you can help at home
¨ Help set two or three specific goals for your child for the next grading period

After the Conference

¨ Share with your child what the teacher reports
¨ Remember that, as a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life. Give your child a hug and reassurance following the conference.

Major studies have shown that the most significant factor in a child’s success is parent involvement and support. Please know how gratified the faculty and staff is for your continued interest in working with our school to provide the best educational experience possible for your children. The teachers look forward to sharing their observations of the first quarter and to charting a course for continued growth and progress for your child.

Share the Good News of Catholic Education!
Do you have friends or acquaintances who have expressed an interest in Catholic education? All Saints Catholic School will host an Information Night for those interested in learning more about the school on Thursday, November 19th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Father Kelley Hall. As it is never too soon to begin planning for a child’s Catholic education, parents of toddlers as well as school-aged children are cordially invited to attend. Following a presentation and overview of the application process, tours of the facility will be provided. For more information, please contact Mrs. Joyce D’Eugenio, administrative assistant, at (703) 393-1490.
