Principal’s Message

Next week All Saints will join with schools across our country in celebrating Catholic Schools Week, an annual opportunity to highlight our heritage and distinct mission.  The theme selected for this year is Catholic Schools ~ Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

At All Saints, this is exactly the type of community we cultivate each day.  With a commitment to academic excellence and more importantly, faith formation & character development, the faculty, staff, clergy and parents are united in their efforts to provide our children with a life-changing educational experience.  Next week we pause to give thanks for the gift of Catholic education and the many blessings we share as members of the All Saints community.

In accordance with diocesan policy, full compliance for an adult parent volunteer is not required for open events.  (An open event is one that is open to the public, infrequent and publicized, such as Field Day, concerts and special events/assemblies.)  However, full compliance is required for adult parent volunteers who wish to participate in closed events.  (A closed event is one that is not entirely open to the general public such as classroom activities, parties, field trips, etc.)  For this reason, all parents who wish to attend field trips or volunteer in support of classroom activities are required to complete the background check process and attend VIRTUS training.

Register for the training course at www.virtus.org for the upcoming session:

The diocese also requires volunteers who have completed the full VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive.  This 30 minute video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school.  The following is a list of upcoming sessions:

Principal’s Message

Over the course of the past two weeks it has been interesting and inspiring to read the many student goals that are now posted outside a number of the classrooms.  In their own individual ways, the students have identified a key action or routine that they wish to adopt, knowing that it represents an opportunity to develop new habits and virtues for the year ahead.  It is yet another example of ways in which the teachers are encouraging students to approach life with a “growth mindset”.

The following are a few examples of their commitments and resolutions for the New Year that I thought you’d enjoy.

I will be kind to others.

I will try to get better at math by listening better.

Start eating more fruits and vegetables.

Make 2-4 goals in soccer.

Pray my prayers.

Help somebody in need.

I will be nicer to my siblings.

Work hard in school.

Read more books.

Eat more pizza with peppers and less with cheese.

And a goal that probably resonates with many of us young and old – sleep in on weekends.  Enjoy the promise of snow and the opportunity for extra rest and relaxation with family this weekend!

Principal’s Message

Friday will be a holiday for the students as the teachers participate in a diocesan-wide professional development day.  So as to keep you apprised of our efforts and our learning priorities for the year, I’d like to share with you the highlights for our day of professional growth.

Teachers in grades three through seven will attend a full day session at St. Theresa School in Ashburn where they will learn about the new standardized testing model that we will implement next year as we migrate to an online assessment tool.  Additionally, during the afternoon hours they will attend a workshop on the design of classroom assessments.

Teachers in grades kindergarten through second will participate in a work session at All Saints where they will continue planning for the implementation of the Lego STEM programs during the morning hours and focus on expansion of differentiation efforts during the afternoon.

The 8th grade and special subject teachers will work on projects and initiatives specific to each of their areas.

For the faculty of All Saints, the diocesan-day of professional development provides an opportunity to both learn about new initiatives while strengthening skill-sets in the areas of STEM and differentiation.

All Saints Receives Major Gift Donation

We are pleased to share with you the exciting news that All Saints Catholic School has recently received a significant financial contribution from an anonymous donor.  The bequest to the school and parish includes the following gifts:

$137,000 to fund the Renovation of Restrooms in the original wing of the school (Grades 2-5 hallway)

$50,000 to Benefit Technology Programs

Consultation with the Diocesan Office of Planning, Construction and Facilities is now underway with the goal of the renovation work being completed during the summer months.

Of the funds allocated for technology, $10,000 will be used for the immediate purchase of a second mobile cart of Chromebooks for the middle school.  This will provide students and teachers with greater access to these learning tools and move us along the path toward one-to-one technology use in grades six through eight.  The remaining technology funding will be held in reserve as we continue planning for the next phase of technology integration at All Saints.

All Saints Catholic School is most grateful for this generous gift that will benefit our school and students for years to come!

Box Tops for Education

Parents, Students and Teachers….keep clipping!  All Saints Catholic School just received a check for $1,745.50 from Box Tops for Education, so you can see that clipping those box tops an easy way to earn money for the school.

Would you believe, we have already collected 4,345 box tops since the November submission. I believe that is a record number of box tops collected in 1 ½ months at All Saints.

Here are the top 5 class rooms to date:

3A – Mrs. Montano      1,297

2A – Mrs. Cummings   945

5A – Mrs. Honkus         906

K1 – Mrs. Feltman        745

1A – Mrs. Harrill            735

There will be a box top party for the classroom with the highest number of box tops turned in at the end of the year. Ask your neighbors, relatives, and co-workers for their box tops too! Thank you.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements

As part of the diocesan initiative to maintain a safe environment for all of our children, all volunteers with “substantial contact” with children are required to complete a background check prior to working in the school and to complete VIRTUS training within 45 days of commencing service.  To register for an upcoming training, please visit www.virtus.org.

Thursday, January 7th, The Church of St. Joseph in Alexandria at 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, January 8th, The Church of Good Shepherd in Alexandria at 9:00 a.m.

Tuesday, February 16th, St. Theresa School in Ashburn at 9:00 a.m.

In accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school.  Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office.

The diocese also requires volunteers who have completed the full VIRTUS training to attend an annual update entitled Keeping the Promise Alive.  This 30 minute video training is a prerequisite for volunteering in the school.  The following is a list of upcoming sessions:

Tuesday, Jan. 12th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 9th in Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 11th in Meeting Room 2 at 2:15 p.m.

Tuesday, March 15th in Meeting Room 2 at 7:00 p.m.

We are requesting advance registration by telephone or email for this brief update.  Attendance will be taken to ensure that you receive credit for completing the training.  If you have any questions or to register, please call Mrs. Janet Smith, Virtus Coordinator at the Parish Office, (703) 393-2158 or email her at jsmith@allsaintsva.org.
