Principal’s Message

Beginning tomorrow we will be implementing several efforts to fine-tune the afternoon dismissal process in the front parking lot. In an effort to maintain a well-organized system, we will return to our prior process of asking parents to wait in front of the parking bays until called to pick up their children. By restricting access to the courtyard and the area adjacent to the parish office until we are ready to begin dismissal, the safety of the children will be further enhanced.   In advance, thank you for your support of these procedures.

A few words about the uniform…I understand from parents that it has been difficult at times to purchase blue crew socks. For this reason, effective today, parents may purchase either blue or black socks for the boys’ uniform. This change will be incorporated in our uniform policy for the upcoming academic year.

Message from Fr. Bob

Dear All Saints School Community,

Earlier this month I used the special and most generous gift that you provided for me to celebrate my 35th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. I went on the all-expense paid two night stay, dinner, and round of golf at the Hyatt Chesapeake Resort in Cambridge Maryland. It was spectacular and the view of the bay so beautiful throughout the hotel grounds. The golf course was in pristine shape and provided many wonderful scenic and challenging holes. I invited my friend, Fr. Mike Bazan to join me and we had a blast. To top it off, I won the money on the golf…he had to pay me 70 cents! (which means I won 7 more holes than he did as we play for a dime a hole.) How sweet it was.

This past weekend the church celebrated Priesthood Sunday. I give thanks to God for each of you and how you have been such a big part of my priesthood the past 14 years. I remember how kind it was for you to celebrate my anniversary last May with the school assembly and want to say “Thank You” for the golf outing which provided two great days of fun and relaxation. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love and blessings,

Fr. Bob

Thanksgiving Luncheon

One of our cherished traditions at All Saints is the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, a special meal prepared by the kitchen staff for students, parents, faculty & staff. In an effort to accommodate all of the families who attend and to reduce wait time, we will again be hosting four lunch seatings this year. The schedule for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is as follows:

11:00-11:40     Grades 6-8

11:40-12:20     Grades 4-5

12:20-1:00       Grades 2-3

1:00-1:40         Grades K-1

The arrival process will be the same as prior years with parents reporting directly to their son/daughter’s classroom. There, they will wait with their children, and when called by grade level, report to the cafeteria via the Father Kelley Wing.

So that the kitchen staff may begin planning for the event, please be sure to return your order form no later than Thursday, November 20th. We do hope that you will join us for this Thanksgiving tradition!

Principal’s Message

This year the Office of Catholic Schools revised the policy by which parents may request that their child not be included in any marketing materials created by the school, such as our website, photographs or recordings.  While Appendix N, Waiver Information/Right to Object continues to be the form used for this purpose, it now includes the following statement: If the form is not returned, we will assume that you prohibit such use.

As the policy now requires that we receive a signed form in order for students to be included in publications, today we are sending home hard copies with each child.  Parents who wish for their son/daughter to be included need only complete the top of the form and sign/date the bottom.  Those who wish not to grant permission can do the same and select from a list of promotional items.

In support of this new process, parents are asked to return all forms by Thursday, October 30th

Should you have any questions about this or wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to let me know.

The Sentinel – October 15, 2014

Principal’s Message

This week I would like to take a moment to provide you with a few updates regarding the

Design for Excellence self-study project.

One of our first tasks was that of reviewing and revising our Mission Statement.  After prayer, reflection and dialogue, the faculty determined that the following statement best communicates our mission, giving particular priority to faith formation and academic excellence while highlighting the charisms of our school.

Centered in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, All Saints Catholic School partners with families to integrate faith formation with academic excellence while focusing on the whole child in a safe, joyful, and welcoming community.

I would also like to thank the many parents who completed the DFE Survey that we administered several weeks ago.  As the participation rate was exceptionally high, approximately 70%, we believe that the responses provide us with a very comprehensive snapshot of parent opinion.  I especially want to thank you for taking the time to provide such thoughtful narrative responses.  In total, the summary report of charts and responses numbers 47 pages – a rich source of feedback that will inform our planning for the future of All Saints.

Although the Curriculum Committee and faculty at large are now beginning the process of analyzing all of the data and highlighting patterns, both Mrs. Campagna and I have already read the entire report. One of the topics identified by a number of respondents relates to recess for grades 3-5, as impacted by the Angelus Prayer that begins at noon each day.  As this is something that has been under review, we implemented a schedule revision last week to provide additional time for students in these grades.  Students will now begin recess at 11:40 a.m. and continue to enjoy free play until the whistle sounds at noon to signal the start of the Angelus, resulting in a full twenty minute recess period.

While it will take some time for the faculty to review and discuss the results of the survey, I do look forward to sharing the details with you in a future newsletter.  For now, know of my gratitude for your commitment to our school as so clearly evidenced by your participation in our survey.  Many thanks for your input!

Seton School – Deferred Acceptance Program

In the Diocese of Arlington we are blessed with an outstanding selection of high school programs: Bishop Denis J. O’Connell (Arlington), Bishop Ireton (Alexandria), Paul VI (Fairfax), Saint John Paul the Great (Dumfries), Seton (Manassas) and Oakcrest (McLean).

Seton School is unique among these options, offering a program that begins at the 7th grade.  For a number of years, Mrs. Carroll, the principal, has graciously extended to the students of All Saints the option of deferred acceptance.  Through this arrangement, students at All Saints who apply for admission to Seton for their 7th or 8th grade years may defer their acceptance until 9th grade.  This, of course, is dependent upon each student continuing to meet the academic and behavioral criteria for acceptance at Seton.

The benefit of this partnership is that our students are able to complete their elementary and middle school years at All Saints, enjoying all of the opportunities for leadership, while being guaranteed a space for their freshman year.  It is important, however, that students who wish to complete the program at All Saints and then attend Seton School for their high school years pursue this deferred acceptance option.

Should you have any questions about this arrangement or about any of the high school programs, please do not hesitate to contact the office for additional information.

Parish Staff & Visitor Parking

Beginning this week, parents are asked not to park in the front lot directly across from the spaces reserved for the clergy.  It is important that we keep these spots open for both parish staff and visitors as they come and go throughout the day. Parents who are volunteering or visiting the school are asked to park in the lot directly in front of the church.

Parent – Teacher Conferences – New Middle School Process

Recognizing that parents may be interested in conferencing with one or more specific middle school teachers, the faculty is pleased to host drop-in conferences for parents of students in grades 6-8 on our conference days.  Rather than being assigned a conference time with the homeroom teacher, parents may stop by the middle school wing at their convenience to request a meeting with any of the teachers.  Five to ten minute mini-conferences will be held from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10th and from 1:00 -5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11th.

Within the next week each student in grades PK-5 will receive a conference appointment slip confirming the date and time for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences.  If you do not receive this information, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Teacher Conference Day Luncheons November 10 & 11, 2014

The Sentinel – October 1, 2014

October 1, 2014

Principal’s Message

Last spring students in grades two through seven participated in the Terra Nova, a nationally normed standardized testing program.  The results of this annual assessment provide data with which we can determine the strengths of our curriculum as well as areas for future growth and improvement.  Most importantly, the data becomes the basis for the annual instructional goal-setting process by which the teachers customize instruction so as to more effectively meet the needs of the children in our classrooms.

This week I am providing to you several testing charts which are linked to this letter and that will also be available on our website for your review.  The bar graphs are designed to provide a quick overview of grade level performance in reading, language arts and math and include a comparison to diocesan averages.  All of the scores are percentile based, comparing the performance of our students and the entire diocese to that of the national norm group.

Once again our students scored in the top 10% nationally at nearly every grade level in all three areas of reading, language arts and math.  Congratulations to our hard-working teachers and students on this outstanding accomplishment!

Consistent with our testing history, our students again excelled in the reading and language arts sections.  While all grades performed right on par with the diocesan average in reading, students in the upper grades achieved stellar scores in the language arts battery.  While math continues to be an area of focus for continued growth, it is notable that students in the younger grades met or exceeded the diocesan average in four of five grade levels.  We are confident that this trend will now begin to expand into the middle school as a result of the recent restructuring of our program.

The teachers have already completed a process entitled Planning for Instruction, by which they have crafted clear, instructional goals that are linked to this data.  With the recognition of patterns across grade levels, there is the opportunity for teachers to collaborate and share new ideas and strategies.

Taking into consideration the trend data from the past five years of testing, their own observations of student learning, and the feedback provided by parents via the recent survey, the Curriculum Committee is now in the process of identifying two aspects of the curriculum to target for future growth as part of the Design for Excellence self-study.  With this plan in hand we will be well positioned to chart a course for the continued success of our program in the years ahead.

Congratulations, teachers and students, on another year of excellent test results!

Lion’s Club Vision and Hearing Screening

On Wednesday, October 15th the third, fifth and seventh grade students are scheduled for a free Vision and Hearing Screening by the Lion’s Club.  Screening will begin at 9:00 A.M.

A permission form will be sent home this week and is necessary for your son/daughter to participate in the Hearing and Vision Screening.  Please sign and return the form to your child’s teacher by October 10thNo screening will be conducted without a signed parental consent form.  Students who wear glasses should have them available for the vision portion of the screening.

School Safety Presentation ~ October 7th (7:00 p.m.)

All parents are cordially invited to the next General Assembly Meeting of the PTO that will take place on Tuesday, October 7th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activities Center.  An overview of our school response plan, designed in coordination with community partners, will be presented.  As this meeting will provide essential information for parents regarding our emergency response plan, at least one parent from each family should plan to attend.  Please note:  Students may not attend this meeting as this session is designed specifically for parents.

PowerSchool Update

Recently it has been difficult for parents to access information regarding specific assignments in the PowerSchool system.  This has now been resolved at the diocesan level and parents can once again find detailed information by simply clicking on a particular grade.  Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve this matter.

Casino & Auction

The Casino & Auction team is seeking donations for the November 15th event.  Items donated will be used in auction or as prizes.  Do you have a timeshare to share?  Frequent flyer miles to pass along?  Season tickets to a sporting event? A home business product (Tastefully Simple, 31, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Jewelry)?  Are you incredibly talented and have a one of a kind homemade item to donate?   Any of these items will add to our event, help raise funds for the school and give your business a marketing boost. Are you wondering what you can do for lunch after the 12:00 dismissal on Friday, October 3rd? You can stop by and see your All Saints friends at Chick-fil-A on Liberia Avenue. Each week I have seen different friends and had a wonderful time. Hopefully you can stop by this week, too! Remember, to save on photocopying expenses, either print out the attached flyer or just mention All Saints. Thanks for all you do to support All Saints!

Pilgrim Virgin Statue Rotation~ Sign up Now to Host Statue in your Home

In keeping with the Holy Father’s Consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary last year, All Saints School families are invited to renew their devotion to Jesus through Mary in a special way.  Beginning Friday, October 10, two statues of Our Lady of Fatima will begin traveling to the homes of our school families for a week long visit.

Families who wish to participate can sign up online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F084CAEAB22A02-pilgrim.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to sign up for the first available week in order to avoid gaps in the schedule.  However, if there is an upcoming event or celebration that is particularly important to your family, i.e. wedding or anniversary, you are most welcome to host the statue during that specific week.

While the statue of Mother Mary is in your home, families are encouraged to pray together either part of or the entire 5-decade rosary for the intentions of our school as well as for your private intentions.  Included with the statue you will find a DVD of “The Day the Sun Danced”, which presents the message of Fatima entrusted to three peasant children in Portugal in 1917.

Should you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact the rotation coordinator, Julie Mantooth (mantooth06@msn.com).
