The Sentinel – March 26, 2014

March 26, 2014

Message from the Principal

On Saturday morning, approximately two hundred people of all ages gathered in the courtyard for the annual Running with the Saints 5K.  It was wonderful to see students, teachers, parents, parishioners, local members of the community and our beloved pastor, Fr. Bob, participating in the event.  The race was particularly special this year as it was the first time that the start and finish line were located on the parish property.  With plenty of space, beautiful facilities, ample parking and a sense of “home”, it was a great experience for the runners as well as those who gathered to support them at the finish line.  I want to take a moment to thank Mrs. Joan Coleman, Mrs. Penny Starrs and Mrs. Wendy Comeau for coordinating the race and the numerous volunteers who provided such great support.  Their attention to the many important details behind the scenes ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for all of the participants. Should you have any comments, questions or input as to how we can further improve the event next year, please send your thoughts via email to info@runningwiththesaints.org or jcoleman02@comcast.net.

Next Wednesday All Saints is pleased to welcome Mr. Tom Kierein, a meteorologist from NBC4, who will speak to students in grades 4-6 about the weather.  Thank you, Mrs. Honkus, for arranging this visit that correlates with the curriculum in these grade levels.

3rd Annual Catholic Cup Challenge

On Monday morning student representatives from grades four through eight participated in the 3rd Annual Catholic Cup, an academic competition that showcases the students’ knowledge of their faith.  Similar to a spelling bee in format, participants took turns answering a series of increasingly challenging questions.

Congratulations to Kimberly Ferguson who won first place and to Eirian Crocker who was the runner-up.  The following students represented their grade levels after winning first place in the classroom competitions.

Lucy Ciskanik (5B)

Eirian Crocker (6A)

Gabe Short (6B)

The Sentinel – March 19, 2014

March 19, 2014

Message from the Principal

Each year I enjoy reading the beautiful bulletin board displays around the school that highlight the good deeds and sacrifices offered by our students during Lent.  The heartfelt prayers and sentiments give witness to the very essence of our mission as a Catholic school.  As you continue your journey through the season, I thought you might enjoy and find inspiration from the following list of practices identified by some of our fourth and fifth grade students.

My Lenten commitment is to not eat cupcakes.

I will pray a rosary each day and think of people that are suffering while I pray.

Donate food to the food pantry.

I will help mom and dad every night.

I’m giving up my mobile devices and also sweets like chocolate.

Be more gentle.

I will give up my favorite breakfast treat, Toast Strudel.

I will prayer for the sick and ask God to give me a serving heart.

The Sentinel ~ March 12, 2014

March 12, 2014

Message from the Principal

Every six years All Saints Catholic School participates in a re-accreditation process called the Design for Excellence.  Beginning in August, the faculty and staff will begin the self-study project, an effort through which we will produce a comprehensive document that details all aspects of our program, including faith formation, curriculum, leadership, personnel, facilities, finances, services and demographics.   Following the completion of this process, a team comprised of eight educators will visit our school next spring to determine our accreditation status and to offer both commendations and recommendations for our future.

In order that the faculty may have the time necessary to complete the self-study project and prepare for the visit, there will be one additional noon dismissal per month next year.  Although the calendar is still under development for 2015-2016, I wanted to provide this information to you at this time so that you might anticipate this change for next year.

As we begin to prepare for the self-study project, I will continue to keep you apprised of our efforts as well as the opportunities that you will have to participate in the process.

Message from the Principal

Congratulations to the students in our second grade program who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday morning.  Following a beautiful prayer service led by Fr. Bob, each of the children encountered Christ in this special Sacrament of healing and grace.  Congratulations to all of the children and thank you, Mrs. Cummings and Mrs. Gurley, for preparing them so well.

As a community of faith, today we begin our journey through the season of Lent.  This afternoon our students gathered in the Parish Activities Center for our annual “Farewell to the Alleluia Banner” prayer service, a tradition by which we remind the children that we will refrain from saying the word “Alleluia” until we celebrate the great joy of Easter.  To symbolize this, students from our 8th grade rolled the Alleluia Banner into a scroll and placed it in a special box where it will remain through the season of Lent.  Upon our return to school following the Easter holiday, the students will gather once again in the PAC at which time the reverse will take place: the students will lift the cover of the box, unroll the banner, and lift it high as the children sing the “Easter Alleluia” and our pre-kindergartners fill the air with the sounds of noisemakers.  Through symbolism and music, our students come to recognize that something very special is happening and that this time of the year is distinct for us as a Catholic school community.

Following the prayer service, the students processed over to church for our Ash Wednesday liturgy and were signed with ashes, a visible reminder of the call to “turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”.

Throughout the season, students will have a number of opportunities to enter more deeply into this life of faith.  The following is a list of our school-wide Lenten observances.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Students in grades 3-8 will have an opportunity to receive the Sacrament during regular school hours.

Stations of the Cross: The students will participate in this traditional Lenten prayer twice during the season, once in a small group setting and once when the entire school gathers.

Abstinence: Our cafeteria staff has designed a menu that reflects the practice of abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent.

Almsgiving: The SCA will once again sponsor the “Prayer & Pennies” Campaign, an annual fundraiser and outreach program.  Students will be encouraged to make small sacrifices of their own, perhaps giving up ice cream at lunch, donating part of their allowance, etc. so that they may place coins in the jar outside their classroom in the morning during the week of March 24th.

7th Grade Passion Play:  On Holy Thursday, the 7th grade class will present the Passion Play, highlighting the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.  This dramatic presentation will take place in the gym on April 17th, following our Handwashing Prayer Service in the church.

Through prayer and sacrifice, our students are reminded that this is a very special time of year.  Repeated year after year, these practices become part of the fabric of our students’ lives, providing them a foundation through the years to come.  This is the very essence of Catholic education…that through encounters with Christ, the lives of our students are transformed…now and forever.

Wishing you a blessed Lenten journey!
