The Sentinel – November 26, 2013

Principal’s Message

With a record attendance of more than 900 students, parents and staff, the Thanksgiving Luncheon has continued to grow as a beloved tradition in our community.  It is always a joy to see so many parents who return year after year for this wonderful occasion.

None of this would be possible without our outstanding kitchen team.  I want to extend a special word of thanks to “Chef” Wendy Matner (Director of Cafeteria Services), Mrs. Liz Werling (Assistant), Mrs. Wilma Marsengill (Cafeteria Bookkeeper) and Mrs. Robin Speicher (Assistant).  Beginning early on Sunday, they cooked and prepared food throughout the day and into the evening hours.  I am tremendously grateful for their dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm.

The success of the luncheon was also made possible by the steadfast support of volunteers, many of whom return each year to offer assistance.  As so many of our volunteers have been supporting the effort through the years, they have specific experience and know exactly what needs to be done.  As such, the entire operation runs smoothly with staff and parents working hand in hand.  Thank you to all of our volunteers for your steadfast support!

I also want to extend a word of appreciation to the members of our maintenance team, who worked diligently behind the scenes in support of the event.  Without their commitment, the event would not have been the success that it was.  Thank you, Mr. Bill Andre (Director of Facilities), Mr. Alex Paul, Mrs. Myra Hayde and Mr. Paul Sledz.

And, of course, a highlight of the luncheon was the fact that our parish priests joined us once again and “worked the line”.  Their presence was yet another testament to their genuine support for the school and their love for the children and families in our community.  Thank you, Fr. Bob, Fr. Melmer, Fr. Juan, Fr. Jeb and Fr. Ogoe.

As we pause from our daily work and schedules to join family and friends to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, please know of my gratitude for your continued support of our school and its mission of providing an education of faith and excellence.  Thank you for choosing our school for your family.  Happy Thanksgiving!

A Prayer of Thanksgiving:

May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face to shine upon us.

The earth has yielded its increase;

God, our God, has blessed us.

May God continue to bless us;

let all the ends of the earth revere him.

            (Psalm 67)

We thank you for your gifts, merciful God,

and we ask you to give all people the food they need.

May we all be united one day

in the eternal singing of your praises,

through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

All Saints Announces Robotics Partnership with Leidos

Robotics Program Announcement

We are pleased to announce that All Saints Catholic School and Leidos have formed a partnership in support of a robotics program for our middle school students.  With generous funding provided by Leidos through Project Lead the Way, we are now well positioned to enrich our curriculum with a program designed to advance the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

As part of our emerging STEM initiative, all 7th and 8th grade students will participate in virtual robotics in the computer lab through a web-based program designed at Carnegie Mellon and purchased with proceeds from the Annual Fund. As students develop skills related to design and programming, those interested also have an opportunity to participate in Robotics Club, a hands-on after school activity.

We are confident that this new STEM program will foster greater interest in these fields of study and introduce our students to potential career paths for the 21stCentury.  We are grateful for the generosity of Leidos and wish to thank for the organization and its employees for their commitment to education.

Principal’s Message

This week I want to congratulate and thank the PTO for hosting the Big Bash on Saturday evening.  It was a wonderful occasion that celebrated the spirit of our school and raised funds in support of our programs.  Without the steadfast commitment of Mrs. Elissa Hackerson and Mrs. Christian Cobb, the co-chairs, along with the steady support of countless volunteers, the event simply could not have been a success.  I thank them for their generous sharing of time and talent over the course of many months as they prepared for our first-ever Big Bash

*****************************************************************************

Three days and counting until the launch of our new middle school robotics program!  We welcome Sr. Bernadette McManigal (Superintendent of Schools), Sr. Karl Ann Homberg (Assistant Superintendent) and Fr. Bob as we celebrate our partnership with a local corporation and officially unveil the program.  All parents are cordially invited to gather with students in grades five through eight for what will be an exciting announcement beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday in the Parish Activities Center.

Student Outreach ~ Bethany’s Cornucopia of Thanksgiving

The All Saints Catholic School annual Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday, November 26 at 9:30 am.  In collaboration with the Parish, we have developed the theme of “Bethany’s Cornucopia of Thanksgiving” whereby all collections will be able to serve approximately 60 families with items to assist them in preparing a Thanksgiving meal.  We are very fortunate to be able to have our Prayer Service on the same day the Bethany Pantry will be providing meals, thus allowing for the collection of fresh food.  In an effort to evenly distribute our collection among the Thanksgiving meal bags, we are asking for grade-level donations this year.  With the generosity of our school community in providing the items below, many families will enjoy a beautiful meal on Thanksgiving Day.

All school parents are cordially invited to join us on Tuesday morning as we give thanks to God for the many blessings of this past year.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Thanksgiving Luncheon – Directions for Parents

Parents are asked to arrive and sign in at the front office fifteen minutes prior to their child’s assigned lunch time.  After signing in, parents are asked to report directly to their child’s classroom.  The homeroom teacher will provide guidance as to when families should begin to report to the cafeteria for the luncheon.

(Note:  Parents attending back-to-back lunch sessions need not wait in line multiple times.  Rather, after enjoying lunch with their first child, they may remain seated in the cafeteria where they can watch for their son/daughter in the food service line.  Once the child has arrived at the front of the line and has been served, the parent is asked to meet the child there and lead him/her back to the table.)

Cafeteria News

Students in grades 5-8 may order an extra entrée on days identified with an asterisk on the school menu.  A charge of $1.00 will be automatically added to their lunch accounts, as long as they maintain a positive balance.  If you do NOT wish to allow your son/daughter to charge this extra amount, please notify the cafeteria staff.  Otherwise, your child will be permitted to place this additional order.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the kitchen at 703-368-4400, ext. 211.

The Sentinel – November 13, 2013

November 13, 2013

Principal’s Message

On Saturday evening our school will host the Big Bash, a new approach to a beloved tradition!  As we gather for this event for the first time in the newly renovated Parish Activity Center, I am reminded of the original “Harvest Auction” which took place in the cafeteria many years ago.   Little would we have guessed that one day in the future, we would be able to bring the auction back home to such a beautiful space. How blessed we are!

While the venue has changed over the course of many years, the cause remains the same.  The funds raised from the Big Bash will enable us to continue to provide our students with a premier educational experience.  With the proceeds from the event we will be able to support the fine work of the Parent-Teacher Organization, thereby enabling us to maintain affordable tuition rates while providing important financial support to programs that directly impact students and faculty.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the celebration as we gather in support of our school and enjoy the theme of “Hollywood Nights”.  With delicious food, casino games, a strolling magician and live auction, as well as music and dancing, it will be a full evening of activities and entertainment.  And in keeping with the theme, you’ll even have a chance to be photographed as you arrive at the event.  I look forward to seeing you on the “Red Carpet”!

******************************************************************************

Two weeks ago I shared with you the exciting news that on November 22nd we will host a special ceremony to celebrate a new corporate sponsorship and to introduce a middle school robotics program!  We look forward to welcoming Sr. Bernadette McManigal, Superintendent of Schools, and our pastor, Fr. Bob, as we officially launch this new program.  Look for more details about this STEM initiative in next week’s newsletter….

Enrollment Survey – Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten & Siblings for 2014-2015

With the demand for Catholic education in our region and the reputation for excellence that our school enjoys, it is important that the office solicit information from current families regarding their plans for enrolling siblings in our Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, or other grade levels for the upcoming year.  As in the past, we will continue to give first consideration to current school families before reviewing applications from new families.

While completion of the attached survey does not guarantee enrollment, it is helpful for us to know how many current families plan to submit an application for a sibling.  Note: For planning purposes, even if you have a child currently enrolled in the Pre-Kindergarten program, we ask that you use this survey to confirm your interest for next year’s Kindergarten.  Please submit all survey responses to the school office by Friday, November 22nd.

Please join us for what has become a beautiful tradition here at All Saints. The evening will begin with an Advent Prayer Service and traditional Advent carols in the church. The “Procession of the Shoes” will again be lead by St. Nicholas himself! St. Nicholas and Mother Seton will be available for photos (bring your own camera) afterwards in the PAC.   For planning purposes, please visit the “Evening with St. Nicholas” link at www.allsaintsvaschool.org and RSVP today!

This very popular community-building event is designed to help us prepare for the Advent season.  Once again, we will be collecting donations of new shoes, with the proceeds benefitting House of Mercy. Donation guidelines are: NEW plain colors of tennis shoes- white, blue, black, tan, or brown.  No character tennis shoes, please.

We will need many hands (and donations) to make the evening a success.  Please go to www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0448AAAF2A1-evening to volunteer your time.  Questions about volunteering- contact event co-chair Gina Michak at ginamichak@gmail.com.  All volunteers at the event MUST be Virtus Trained.

Food donations are needed for the evening’s refreshments. We are asking for Christmas cookies/decorated sugar cookies, (homemade or store bought), cocoa mix (packets OR canisters) and mini-marshmallows. Cookies only, please. While the All Saints School community is always very generous when asked to donate baked goods, the simplicity of a cookie is all we need for this event. Thank you for your understanding and generosity.  Please go to www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0448AAAF2A1-evening to donate!

Contact event co-chair Kate Bachman at katebachman2002@aol.com with questions about food donations or to volunteer for the at home volunteer opportunities:

*          4 large boxes wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper to collect shoe donations.

*          Covering battery-operated candles with pink/purple paper for the advent wreath centerpieces.

The PTO looks forward to seeing you on December 6th.

The Sentinel – November 6, 2013

November 6, 2013

Principal’s Message

While October was the month during which schools unite nationally in fostering “bully-free zones”, this is a commitment that we live out throughout the year at All Saints.  Through our Virtue Program and the full integration of our faith across the curriculum, students are encouraged to develop habits of respect, kindness, and compassion.  Over the course of years, these traits become embedded and part of the fabric of our students’ lives.  Nevertheless, it is vitally important that we explicitly remind our students of the dangers and consequences of bullying.

We now know and recognize that the challenge of bullying in our country is not going to simply disappear.  For this reason, our families and Catholic school are called to be counter-cultural, taking a clear stand against these behaviors.  It is our responsibility to guide the children in recognizing that each individual is created in the very image and likeness of God.  As such, respect and reverence should surround all interactions.  Similarly, the complexities and risks associated with technology in the 21st Century are a part of our day to day existence.  It remains our responsibility to teach the children how to navigate these information highways, always using technology in a manner that shows respect to one another and God’s creation.

In accordance with our school and diocesan policy, this week I would like to invite all parents to participate in an anonymous, online survey for the purpose of assessing the level of bullying at All Saints Catholic School.  We estimate that it should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete the survey.  Students in grades 3-8 will complete a corresponding survey during their computer class beginning next week.

Parents are asked to complete the survey by Friday, November 15th.  In advance, we thank you for your participation in our efforts to both assess our current climate and to establish benchmarks for future reference.

If perhaps you are wondering what you can do as a parent to further support this initiative, I would offer the following suggestions:

1)      Take some time this week to review the topic of bullying with your son/daughter.  Help them to understand that the repeated, targeted nature of bullying is very hurtful, often resulting in wounds that last years, and in some cases a lifetime.  Help them to understand that all students have a right and expectation to be able to come to school each day to learn in an environment free of fear.

2)      Remind your child that, should he/she ever encounter an instance of bullying, it is vitally important that he/she share this information with a faculty or staff member.  If for any reason they are uncomfortable doing so, please contact your child’s teacher directly.  It is only with this type of information that we are able to take steps to help prevent future occurrences.

3)      Spend some time discussing with your child the practical steps that he/she can take to discourage bullying.  For example, sharing strategies or even role-playing appropriate responses can help to empower students not to laugh, not to participate, and to take a stand whenever they witness an instance of bullying.

Report Cards & Parent-Teacher Conferences

On Friday teachers will distribute first quarter report cards to students in grades 1-8 and progress reports for those in Kindergarten.  In preparation for the parent-teacher conferences next week, please take some time to review all of the information provided by the teacher, noting any special areas of success or difficulty.  Additionally, we encourage you to speak with your child to determine if there is anything that he or she would like you to address with the teacher.  Please feel free to make a list of any questions or concerns that you wish to discuss during the conference.  While the time for conferences is somewhat limited, the teachers are committed to addressing the development of your child and welcome any questions you might have.  Recognizing that experiences in the home also affect a child’s performance at school, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss any changes in routine, significant events, such as the death of a close relative or pet, or any other occurrences that might be affecting your child’s behavior.  The better the teacher understands the specific needs of each of the children, the better he or she will be able to assist them in their learning.

The following is a list of ideas that may prove helpful as you plan for a successful and productive meeting.

Before the Conference

¨       Arrive on time

¨       Bring a written list of questions or points for discussion

¨       Realize that your child may exhibit different behaviors at school than at home

During the Conference

¨       Ask for examples of your child’s work

¨       Discuss specific strengths & weaknesses of your child as a learner

¨       Ask the teacher for specific ways in which you can help at home

¨       Help set two or three specific goals for your child for the next grading period

After the Conference

¨       Share with your child what the teacher reports

¨       Remember that, as a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life.  Give your child a hug and reassurance following the conference.

Pearson PowerSchool – Discrepancy regarding reporting of Half Day Absences

With the diocesan transition to a new database and report card software, we are continuing to work through some of the related changes.  With the prior system, it was our practice to record a “half day absence” for any student signed out prior to noon or entering school after 11:10 a.m. The software automatically tallied this information and reported it within the “absence” field.  However, at this time “half day absences” are being shown on the report cards as “tardies”.  For example, a student who has reported to school on time every day but has left once prior to noon due to illness will receive a report card that indicates one “tardy”.  As this is a system-wide discrepancy, the issue is being addressed at the diocesan level.  As this is being resolved, should you have any questions about your child’s attendance record, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Annual Fund – Launched for 2nd Year!

Last week each family received an introductory letter and accompanying flyer outlining the goals of the Annual Fund.  Again this year, we invite you to make contributions of prayer, service and/or financial donations, all of which are important gifts that will help us sustain our mission now and into the future!  All funds received will be used in support of tuition assistance, the purchase of math & science equipment, and the installation of WiFi access throughout the school.

We ask this in Your Holy Name.

Amen.
