Principal’s Message

On Monday evening our community gathered in the Parish Activities Center for the performance of the annual Christmas Pageant, a tradition at All Saints that highlights the true meaning of the season.  I wish to thank and congratulate our kindergarten, second, sixth and eighth grade students for a beautiful presentation of the Nativity story.  After a program of readings and carols, the evening concluded with a living Nativity Scene, portrayed by the students in the 6th grade Theater Arts class.  As the lights grew dim and Ms. Dalusung sang Of the Father’s Love Begottenthose present enjoyed a moment of Advent reflection.  With the lights focused on the image of the Holy Family, a stirring scene was created, providing inspiration for young and old as we excitedly anticipate the celebration of the birth of our Savior.

The Pageant was made possible through the combined efforts of Mr. Tessier and Ms. Dalusung, each of whom shared their particular gifts and expertise in support of the program.  I am grateful for their creativity and enthusiasm, both of which inspired our students to prepare such a beautiful presentation.

During the month of December, the students have focused on the virtue of generosity and have truly given from their hearts.  I am pleased and proud to share with you that the children donated nearly 300 toys in support of the Toys for Tots Program as well as more than $100.00 to benefit Catholic Charities.  It is wonderful to think of the comfort and joy that our students will be providing to the less fortunate in our community through their sacrificial giving.  Thank you students for making a difference this Christmas season!

On behalf of the faculty & staff of All Saints Catholic School, I wish all of you a blessed Christmas Season!  May the holiday be filled with great joy as you gather with family and friends to celebrate the birth of our Savior!

A Prayer for Advent ~ Week IV

Father, all-powerful God,

your eternal Word took flesh on our earth

when the Virgin Mary placed her life

at the service of your plan.

Lift our minds in watchful hope

to hear the voice which announces His glory,

and open our minds to receive the Spirit

who prepares us for His coming.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Principal’s Message

This week I wish to provide you with an update regarding a change in our Middle School program for the second semester.  It is with regret that I inform you that Ms. Coto, 8th grade homeroom and middle school language arts teacher, has tendered her resignation effective Friday, January 20th.  After a period of discernment, she has decided to leave All Saints in order to pursue a teaching opportunity in higher education.

I recognize that this is difficult news as Ms. Coto has been a long-standing member of our faculty who has not only been highly effective in the classroom, but has also established wonderful rapport with our students and parents.  Indeed, she will be greatly missed as she transitions to her new position.

In her place I am pleased to announce that I have hired Mrs. Melissa DeBruyne, a highly experienced Catholic educator. Many of you may know Mrs. DeBruyne already as three of her children are enrolled at All Saints.  She and her family relocated to Northern Virginia from Washington State where she was most recently employed as librarian and enrichment coordinator at St. Monica Parish.  Prior to that time, she taught middle school language arts for a number of years in New Hampshire.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Southern Maine.  In addition to her classroom experience, she served as a consultant in both New Hampshire and Washington in the areas of differentiation of instruction and alternative assessment.  Needless to say, Mrs. DeBruyne brings an ideal skill-set that is very well matched with the needs of our school during this mid-year transition.  I am delighted that she will be joining our team following the Christmas holiday and am confident that she will carry forward the good work begun by Ms. Coto.

In order that Mrs. DeBruyne may become acclimated to the mission and culture of All Saints, she will begin employment on Thursday, January 12th, spending a week shadowing Ms. Coto, learning the routines, and becoming familiar with our school procedures.  Additionally, she will host an open house on Thursday, January 19th from 3:30 -5:00 p.m., providing parents with an opportunity to meet her prior to her first day of teaching on Monday, January 23rd.

I recognize that the departure of a teacher during the middle of the year presents a difficult challenge for the students, most especially those in the 8th grade program.  Please know of my commitment to ensuring a transition that is minimally disruptive and particularly supportive of our soon to be high school students.

*************************************************************************************

Congratulations to the members of the Beginner and Advanced Bands on a wonderful performance last evening.  As always, the students delivered a performance that was truly impressive.  It never ceases to amaze me as to how much a group of students can accomplish over the course of a few months.  Without a doubt, the guidance provided by our band director, Mr. Barry Ward, and his assistant, Mr. Mark Moccio, inspired our students to perform at such a high level.  I was particularly proud of our young soloists who courageously showcased their individual skills.  The closing number performed by the “Santa Hat Quartet” was delightful, yet further evidence of the inspiration and encouragement provided by our outstanding band directors!

A Prayer for Advent ~ Week III

Lord God,

may we, your people,

who look forward to the birthday of Christ,

experience the joy of salvation

and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Message from the Principal

This past weekend was a very festive time for our school community as we gathered for the 3rd Annual Evening with Nicholas celebration on Friday evening followed by the Manassas Christmas Parade on Saturday morning.

The Evening with St. Nicholas event has developed into a beautiful tradition culminating with a “Procession of Shoes” at the conclusion of the prayer service.  Following in the footsteps of St. Nicholas and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the children placed their shoes and financial donations at the foot of the altar.  Through the generosity of the families in attendance, our school donated 59 pairs of shoes and $140.00 to the House of Mercy.  At the end of the prayer service, families gathered in the gym to enjoy a time of fellowship, with cookies, hot cocoa and photos with our special guests, St. Nicholas and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

I want to thank Mrs. Gina Michak for her dedication and enthusiasm in continuing to serve as chairperson of this event. Assisted by numerous volunteers, she organized a wonderful celebration at the beginning of Advent that provided our families with an opportunity to reflect on the true message of the season.

On Saturday morning a number of students and parents gathered in Old Town to represent our school in the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade.  I want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Stevens for once again coordinating the design and construction of our school float and for providing the storage space during the weeks leading up to the event.  The float was beautifully decorated with art work created by individual students in our school.  It was a joy to see the children so proud of their efforts and representing our school in the very well attended parade.  Additionally, I want to congratulate and thank the CYO cheerleaders for their presence as well.  Marching behind the float, their smiles and enthusiasm lifted the hearts of those lining the parade route.

A Prayer for Advent ~ Week II

God of power and mercy,

Open our hearts in welcome.

Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy,

So that we may share His wisdom

And become one with Him

When He comes in glory,

For He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

One God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Advent Reminders

v  6th Annual Catholic Schools Care About Catholic Charities Week ~ Through small personal sacrifices (perhaps giving up an ice cream or pretzel during lunch) we are asking that each student make a donation of $1.00.  All donations will be dedicated to Christ House (a Catholic Charities Homeless Shelter), Christ House on Wheels and other Catholic Charities programs.  In addition to helping provide for the poor, our students will gain a greater awareness of the needs of others right in our own diocese through participation in this important outreach.

v  Toys for Tots ~ Donations of unwrapped new toys are now being collected through Friday, December 16th.  Collection points are located by the front office and breezeway where students enter the building.

LIBRARY NEWS

TIS THE SEASON TO READ!

A big THANK YOU goes out to all parents, students and teachers that supported our recent Scholastic Book Fair!  What a great way to have celebrated reading and raise funds for our school library. The theme To The Book Fair and Beyond kept the excitement building as we transformed the library into an intergalactic showcase for books!  Students were fascinated by the extraordinary spaceship that hovered above the library circulation desk all week.   Plus the guessing game was quite challenging as students were put to the test to figure out how many stars could possibly fit into the Space Odyssey Jar for daily Book Fair gift certificates.   This fun-filled event could not be accomplished without our devoted All Saints families that graciously volunteered to make the Book Fair a huge success.  Your generosity enabled the profits from the Book Fair sales to exceed over $12,000 earning the library $3,000 to spend on books and special school programs.

Evening with St. Nicholas- Thank You.

This year’s “Evening with St. Nicholas” was another wonderful showing of fellowship, fun, and the Advent spirit for all in our school and parish community!  Thank you to Fr. Bob, Mrs. Campagna, and Mr. Conroy for guiding our beautiful prayer service.

We had plenty of cocoa, marshmallows and cookies, and amazing volunteers!   Thank you to those who helped decorate the gym, ran errands, worked the cookie table, and stayed to help clean up.  Many of you are repeat volunteers, and I appreciate your continued support!  Thanks to Nancy Kenney and her “cocoa crew” , everyone’s cups overflowed with hot cocoa throughout the evening.

Thanks to Miss Dalusung, members of Schola, and the children who participated as readers and greeters at the service for sharing your time and talents with us.

The real success of the event is the love and support our community showed to House of Mercy.  Thanks to your generosity we collected $140 and 59 pairs of new shoes!

The PTO looks forward to another “Evening with St. Nicholas” in 2012!

God Bless- Gina Michak

Edline Updates – Middle School Parents

In recent weeks the Middle School Team has taken the time to evaluate the implementation process of Edline, taking into account the feedback received from parents.  As a number of parents have reported that they are receiving an overabundance of emails related to the posting of grades, the teachers will discontinue this feature effective this week.  The data will remain available, but it will be incumbent upon parents to log-on to the system periodically to check their son/daughter’s progress.  All middle school parents are encouraged to use the system to gain meaningful information regarding grades and learning.  Should you have any questions about the system, please do not hesitate to contact your son/daughter’s homeroom teacher.
